It's certainly possible, I did.

My grandmother thought reading was important, so by 3 I could read basic ones, I liked Clifford the Big Red Dog and the Berenstein Bears. We would go to the library twice a week and read kids books.

The first real book I read was Bambi, my great-grandmother gave it to me for a gift when I started kindergarten. She heard I liked the movie, and got me the actual English translation of the novel, a misunderstanding that I can't thank her for enough. After that I started getting Hardy Boys and the Narnia books from the library. I got the Hobbit from an aunt who was a huge Tolkien buff and felt that CS Lewis had plagiarized it when writing the Narnia series.
 
While I didn't read the Hobbit as a child, I did understand a good bit of it. My father read it to me, and was pretty animated about it.
 
First book was around 4 years of age; I can't remember the title, but the main plot was that a kid's dog felt ignored, something or other about paying attention to an egg that was hatching. The dog, with some help from squirrels and rabbits, etc., made an egg for the dog to be inside out of sticks and stuff. It was painted really colorfully. They rolled the egg to the center of town. Everyone was excited except the boy - he was sad because his dog was missing. Then, the dog hearing this broke out of the egg and everyone was happy. The end.

I can picture some of the pages in my head, but cannot remember the name of the book. My parents got me a big box/collection of similar length books when I was in kindergarten. I read them all multiple times, but that one was one of my favorites.
 
BASIC computer games, mid 70's. Various IBM Redbooks all around that time, not sure what was first. Neighbor got me into them, he worked for IBM.

I vaguely recall seeing those in French class when I was a kid. No idea why they didn't use the English name. He's still Clifford in the civilized parts of Canada. 😛

I honestly don't remember the first book I read by myself. I do remember my mom reading to me a lot when I was little. I used to really enjoy reading before the system beat it out of me in middle school. Just became a chore from that point forward.

Yeah pretty much this. All the books I had were French. Went to French school till College.
 
First book I can vaguely recall was something called a shape-book.

First I really recall reading on my own: One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue fish by Dr Suess.

First real books I read were the Chronicles of Narnia ... read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings not long after. Not sure of exact age it was a long time ago lol.


Edit: My mom read to my brother & I constantly when we were little. Both he & I knew how to read well before we ever set foot in school.

I'm sure the first book I read myself must have been Enid Blyton's Secret Five or something (With the main kid/detective named 'Fatty'!)

But my dad used to read out classic books to us as entertainment, because we did not have TV or any other such, and that predates my learning to read. The first story I remember him reading was Rip Van Vinkle, which was fun. Then he moved on to The Cask Of Amontillado, and a creepier story does not exist for me, at my age now, let alone a kid of 4!
 
I'm not going to vouch for what's-his-name, but I also was reading 12th grade stuff in 2nd grade. It happens.

My grandmother read me that book every time I was over there. I ended up reading it myself.

The first book I sat down and read all the way through by myself was an old Catholic school primer. I think it was the Catholic edition of one of the Dick and Jane series books. I know "Friends" was in the title but that applies to most of the Dick and Jane series. The book consists of short morality tales concerning a couple kids in parochial school.
