Community service. I have no idea how community service has anything to do with education, unless you buy into the 'well rounded student' crap, in which case there are many things that should be taken care of before you force your students to do labor.

To be honest Ricemarine, all the classes I took in HS better prepared me for college and life, including the 100+ hours of volunteer work :)

Phys Ed is definitely the stupidest idea I think that anyone has ever come up with for public education.

I actually know a couple of kids that are homeschooled as a result of being told they would not graduate without taking physical education.

physical education over here, you can waive it if you are taking running start (or, if you are low on finishing your required classes) (program where you go to community college and gain high school/college credit)... Only applies in Washington though, so college credit doesn't apply to other states.

You also have to take 2 years of foreign language, which can also include the language you took in middle school.

Unfortunately, here, phys ed cannot be waived for any reason whatsoever... the board of ed said that it's a state requirement.

Foreign language is optional... I think. I took 4 years of Spanish... still cannot form even a very basic Spanish sentence, spoken or written. I understand why it might be required, it would be useful... but I'm apparently not the world's greatest student of foreign language. There's just... no hope for me. Scares the crap out of me that if I ever go to college, it will be required. :(

We had at thing called a graduation project. Basically take any class project that you did, and do a few more things with it to forfull certian requirements set by the state, and Bam you have a graduation project. With out that, regardless of grades, you could not graduate.

Physical education was always a great break from the day...who wouldn't want to play ultimate frisbee or basketball or floor hockey with friends? It was always a great stress reliever for me.

I was heavily involved with service board/community service, so I guess I am biased...but I really doubt learning to care/work with others is gonna kill you and if you took it seriously than it would have made a difference in your life.

Physical education is much more important I would say for lower/middle schoolers though...teach them regular exercise/proper diet/ get them running around

not like obesity isn't a big enough problem already.

Senior project here heh...
Do a project that takes more than 2 hours to complete, and make a long report about it...

Too bad they took off building computers as a project...

Are you kidding me? We've already got way too many fatasses in this nation. I for one am glad that the PE at my department is so serious and performance-based. It can really help with your self-image and it can also not help, but either way, I think it's important.
