I really want to see Tyrannosaur if/when it hits Netflix or Redbox. But of the movies i saw this year i think Super 8 was my favorite. Made me feel like a kid again at 38. Only had 2 parts that bothered me.
Derailing a train with a small pickup and then also surviving said head on :p

I liked Super 8 a lot too, though I found the ending to be a bit much; I want to buy it, but it's way too expensive right now.

any movie with nicholas cage automatically sucks, except The Rock.

sorry if you are butt hurt because i don't agree with your tastes in movies.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Awesome movie.

The Rock is the worst movies he's ever been in because it's The Rock, and it is a horrible movie.

Nick Cage is actually really awesome, or really shitty. Just depends. Fact is--he doesn't give a shit. I think it's because he's always in debt, or something, heh.

Really? Worse than Ghost Rider (worst movie of all time IMO)? He is hit or miss for me. I liked him The Rock, National Treasure movies, Weather Man, Kick Ass. But outside those (that ive seen) i dont really care for him much.

Probably something with Stoya AND Bobbi Starr.

No really, I'm not kidding. This has been a horrid year for movies unless you love stupid action flicks and lame, dumb comedies.

I just have to come in here and say this. Drive was absolutely terrible. I am a huge movie fan. I like Ryan Gosling. I like action movies and I like movies that are more artistic, deep etc...

Drive is one of the few movies I didn't even finish watching. I got to the last 20-30 minutes or so and just got sick and tired of it. It was sooooo boring/slow I was supremely disappointed.

Drive was fucking terrible. probably the most overhyped piece of shit i saw in 2011 actually. the acting was just terrible in that movie. it pretty much only had 1 cool part in it (scene with the shotgun). i'd have to see a list of all the movies in 2011 to be able to remember everything i saw in 2011 to pick one out.

EDIT:

from that list posted above it would be one of the ones below:

X-Men First Class
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
In Time
Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Recon

After the whole Tebow thread, purbeast, I'm glad you're posting something I can agree with. I thought I was going to have to put you on my enemies list!

DRIVE WAS AWFUL!!!

Ok, good movie though? Warrior. Excellent movie. One of the best fighting movies ever made, IMO. Extremely, surprisingly good.

I can see disliking Drive, it's not for everyone, but to say the acting was terrible is completely absurd.

You need to see Raising Arizona, Leaving Los Vegas, Matchstick Men, Lord of War, BL: Port of Call, New Orleans.

He's done lots of great stuff which, I think, successfully counterbalances the crap.

Raising Arizona was awesome. Most people dont know this but good comedy is extremely difficult and requires lots of hard work and strong knowledge about all comedy up to this point in time.

any movie that is boring as shit and does not entertain me is a terrible movie. i watch movies for 1 reason and 1 reason only - to be entertained. i can be entertained very easily with movies. so when a movie fails to entertain me, it's terrible.

remember, it's only an opinion.

And I mow may be a Rooney Mara fan!

2011 was a fairly bad year honestly for film. The best films I've seen this year haven't actually been 2011 releases. Haven't seen the new Dragon Tattoo US version, but bet it's pretty good. Did see Drive, enjoyed it, but think it's a bit overrated, particularly compared to the brutal epic brilliance of Valhalla Rising, Refn's uncompromising earlier work.

If I had to pick, I'd say TTSS, simply because it doesn't really fail on any level. It's really quite good, and close to excellent, but that's a hard thing to say when saying it was the best film of an entire year.

Oh, and Senna is excellent, but in the most technical terms was a 2010 film, but I can understand it being on 2011 lists as that's when virtually everyone got a chance to see it outside of film festivals or Brazilian cinemas.

Agreed, Cage is fun to poke fun at simply because of the sheer volume of poor to average films he's done. Even some of his 'bad' films are great fun if you're in the mood for brainless action bravado. Con Air and The Rock are probably the best examples, big stupid fun, great with a beer, pizza, and friends.

These threads are always amazing to me, for two reasons:

1) I get to hear about a few obscure movies that flew under my radar that I now know exist.

2) The vast array of opinions is astounding. My favorite movie of 2011 is probably Drive or the latest X-Men. And to hear someone say that they think Drive is "fucking awful" just blows my mind. I was sucked into it instantly with the mood and music and its sweet cinematography. I just can't imagine being so repulsed by it with the seething hatred of a 1000 demons like some people in here portray themselves. I just find it fascinating. People are wired so damn differently.

That's fine, I was not arguing that, to each their own on the enjoyment of a particular film. You didn't like it? Ok, whatever, there are lots of movies I dislike too. My argument was with whomever said the acting was terrible because that is very much not true and the acting is far less subjective than whether something entertained you or not.

i also said the acting was terrible, and it was. it's stiff with no emotion. that main guy (dont even know his name) was just terrible. he was a big part of why i thought the movie was bad, since he did not play the part at all. he just sounded like and looked like a big pussy, then goes all apeshit out of nowhere. the dialog between him and the main chick felt extremely forced and awkward pretty much 99% of the exchanges they had in the film. the main chicks boyfriend also was bad at acting.

what the fuck? how did any of you like drive? I watched it on the airplane last week because i remembered reading this thread a while back. aside from the first scene, it was a ton of cliches and lame nouveau styling with bad dialogue. it was by far the worst movie i've seen this year.
are you the same people that like bridesmaids?

i also watched dr strangelove for the first time on the same flight and thought that was an awesome movie... 10000% better than this POS.

Loved Drive so much, it wasnt just my favourite film of last year it was my favourite film of maybe the last two?

Tinker Tailor was a close second.

Adored drive. Trying really hard to find a cinema poster from it online (I collect UK Cinema Quads) but can't, really high demand.

"Drive" seems to be a love it or hate it kind of film.

Most of the people I've talked to who didn't like the movie were expecting it to be an action film with, well, a lot of driving. Instead, it's a violent film with touches of light romance and emotion. I think if you liked Drive's unnamed, blank slate of a protagonist (aside from Gosling flashing his smile a couple hundred times, you could have replaced him with the Stig) you could appreciate the plot and the ironic title.

I loved Drive, it was definitely my favorite movie of 2011. The soundtrack was excellent, as well. Senna - already mentioned in this thread - is a moving documentary, and it's on Netflix streaming (so is Drive). I didn't expect myself to be engrossed in a documentary about an F1 driver, but Ayrton Senna had an interesting career and life and an engaging personality.

Drive, The Guard, Page 8, Goon, Sucker Punch, Legend of Awesomest Maximus (f* brilliant), Limitless, Hobo With Shotgun.

My vote for best film goes to Page 8, with Drive in 2nd place and The Guard 3rd.
