I'm torn between Another Earth, The Ides Of March, Drive and Warrior.

Just to be different i'm going with Another Earth.

I haven't really seen many 2011 films yet since they haven't been added to netflix streaming, and many aren't out on bluray either ...

If 13 Assassins counts, it's certainly my #1, however IMDB says it's 2010.... Otherwise Hobo with a Shotgun would have been my favorite.

Note: I am a big fan of war movies, of samurai movies, and of Takashi Miike films, and I think Akira Kurosawa may have been the best director who ever lived (13 Assassins shares many parallels with 7 Samurai, certainly it's a great story!). So I have a bit of a bias towards just about everything about 13 Assassins ...

Has anyone seen Tree of Life? Just remembered it was getting a little pub and noticed that no one had mentioned it in the thread.

Sucker Punch.....ok that's only with the sound off

I enjoyed a bunch of them

- as for what was 'the best' movie - I would have to go with The Way Back

Tree of Life - it's hard to watch - not sure why they needed all the music/pictures instead of just the film and the story.

I think that's just T.M.'s style. I like The Thin Red Line but had the same reaction though it was directed to long camera shots of birds and extremely long, unspoken monologues (maybe there is a better word for what I just described lol... internal discussion, reflection, etc.).

2011 sucked in terms of movies.

That being said, the factual best movie of 2011 was 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2'.

Didn't see it but i doubt I would enjoy it.

I'm so confused by this post. Guess that means it's time to get back to work. :p

I liked (no order):

Limitless
The Way Back
Source Code
The Adjustment Bureau
War Horse
Hugo
The Thing
Moneyball
Red State
Contagion
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Attack the Block
Harry Potter - Deathly Hallows 2
Super 8
The Tree of Life
Hanna
The Mechanic

Pretty good year for movies, imo.

Drive was fucking terrible. probably the most overhyped piece of shit i saw in 2011 actually. the acting was just terrible in that movie. it pretty much only had 1 cool part in it (scene with the shotgun). i'd have to see a list of all the movies in 2011 to be able to remember everything i saw in 2011 to pick one out.

EDIT:

from that list posted above it would be one of the ones below:

X-Men First Class
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
In Time
Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Recon

You sound like my friend who goes and sees all the Nicholas Cage movies because it's all over the top action and the plot and story doesnt matter.

Drive was an amazing movie, sorry that they weren't constantly chopping heads off or transforming into robots.

this is my best film of 2011, but not one that I would recommend to most people.

I do need to see Drive.

Movies are an entertainment product designed to generate revenue for the movie studio.
The movie which generated the most revenue was Harry Potter.
Therefore, the best movie of the year was factually Harry Potter.

Now asking someone what their favorite movie of 2011 was is a different question that can lead to many different answers.

I really want to see Tyrannosaur if/when it hits Netflix or Redbox. But of the movies i saw this year i think Super 8 was my favorite. Made me feel like a kid again at 38. Only had 2 parts that bothered me.
Derailing a train with a small pickup and then also surviving said head on :p
