someone care to explain what is wrong with WinME?

WinME crashed way more often the older win95,98 systems. with win98se i would crash maybe once a week. I recieved winME and that crashed almost daily. I had to reinstall ME at least once a month for the 3 months i had it. I finally got tired of it and reinstalled win98.

Change the first instance of 98se to 98, change month to week and the last word to 2000 and you have what I did 🙂

Uhm, aren't you a few years behind with this thread?? 😉

I don't know what they changed, but, WinME certainly is the blacksheep of the Win9x series.

It's just buggy and unstable.

98SE is much MUCH better. At one point I'd put 98SE on par w/ XP but now XP has the edge as there have been numerous updates for drivers and such. Thus, in MS OS Order of Favorites:

WinXP / Win98SE / Win2K -- lots of other stuf --- / Dos 2.10 / SharpStickInTheEye / Chinese Water Torture / WinME

Billy Boy discovered crack that month... 😉

Seriously... They were getting hammered by the OEM's. Remember, about this time Linux was gaining some momentum with the big cookie cutter makers! They were planning on charging an arm and a leg for 2k, and were afraid that Dell, Compaq, etc, would more aggressively pursue Linux or another alternative.

Bill's cry: "Pretty up 98 quick! We need something cheap!"

So they did. ME didn't go through the same testing that 2k and even 98 went through, but because it was mostly 98 anyway they let it go, figuring it would be ok. The oem pricing was less than half that of 2k, and gave the big makers a cheap OS to put on the machines that was easier to swallow than Linux.

ME was basically an attempt to kill Linux, and it's mostly worked. 🙁

Best idea I've heard yet.

That was the first Windows OS I actually paid money to have (all the others I had thru MSDN or free from being in the Beta programs but those had run out).

I feel like a fool for having bought it.

Mmm, crack! I sure do love smoking crack, even with my burned fingers! I just wish these bugs would stop crawling inside my skin. AUUUUGGGHHHHH!! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!! GET IT OUT, GET IT OUT!!!! *takes a broken 95 CD and tries to cut open his arms with it*

You put Win98SE above Win2k?

Yeah, WTH are you thinking?

Maybe Gates was wanting some fun so he released it know threads like this will show up sooner or later 😉

Seriously, gawd... I hated that piece of crap. Oh well, I didn't stay on it too long, upgraded to XP soon after...

It actually works really well on my older laptop that can't handle win2k or winXP. Has quite a bit more driver support that windows 98se. I wouldn't load it on a machine that could take win2k or winxp though.

Hmm, I must have been lucky because I used it for 2 years without any problems. To me it was pretty much the same as 98SE. I can't believe people say it's worse than 95 - 95 was more problematic for me than any other OS I've had.

You mean more driver support for newer things???? Darn near everything comes with 95/98 drivers even now... And ME was missing drivers for seemingly anything more than a week old at shipping... :|

Highly unstable. My dad bought a Dell with WinME pre-installed and it would literally lock up once an hour. We formatted and installed Win2kPro and it ran like a dream.

OEMs were the big push behind WinME. Win98 was getting long in the tooth, even Win98SE, and many regular users won't upgrade unless they get a new OS. MS and the OEMs felt that Win2kPro was too expensive and too advanced for most users, so they came up with WinME. In a nutshell, it was Win98SE except no DOS and with Win2k icons. The nice thing is that they sold it relatively cheap, IIRC only $49 bucks.

MMMmmmm.... drugs. No seriously, if a machine will run 2K I'd just assume put XP on it. Otherwise, 98SE fits the bill. Thus I have much less use for 2K than 98SE or XP.
