What video card to upgrade to from x1900xt

Hey everyone.

I want to upgrade my video card.

I currently have the following setup:

Gigabyte 965p-DS3 mobo
Core 2 Duo Proc
PCI-E ATI x1900xt
Corsair 650W PSU

My monitor is a dell 24" LCD. So my rez is normally very high 1900x1200

What would be the best card to upgrade from this? I know there are alot of crazy cards but since my system is somewhat dated what would be reasonable?

I would say 200-300$

Thanks

Ok. thanks

Would the 512mb version be sufficient? Do you see that much more performance from 1gb? Also this will be compatible with my mobo correct?

I saw this for sale in the forums:

Sapphire HD4870 Toxic Edition 512MB DDR5 PCIe

Thanks again.

512 MB would work okay but at that resolution and with a card as powerful as the 4870, it would be a bit of a bottleneck. 1 GB is the way to go, it's only like $30 more.

MIght want to wait a couple weeks. AMD is slashing prices on the 4850/4870. Should be some really good deals coming soon. I recommend the 4870 1GB.

I don't have an answer to when the prices will cut (Though I would expect them to hit the store pricing within this month)

More of a "State of the union" about current/near future midrange video cards in general, more towards your original question..you should check out my somewhat lengthy reply in another thread.

Hopefully that will place some perspective on your future purchasing decision...most likely you should skip any of the 512MB cards, I think you would regret that in the next year or so when newer games strain your system a bit.

More price drop info/rumor and more insight as to whats the best card for your money right now from another forum thread here.

EDIT: "ATI's price cuts are anticipated to take effect early this week."

That sounds good. Thanks.

Im going to go with the 4870. I found it used for 140$ shipped so that should be right around where the price cuts are at.
