At stock speeds the 6800GS is superior to a X800GTO

At overclocked speeds the X800GTO is superior to the 6800GS.

If it just happens to unlock, in addition to the overclock, the X800GTO will stomp all over the 6800GS.

I was looking at the X1600Pro and its about the same price as the X800GTO's, but the X1600Pro core is clocked 100Mhz faster than the X800GTO. Does core speed matter anymore?

The x1600 is basically a 4 pipe card with 3 pixel shaders per pipe. And in most cases it loses to a stock gto, nevermind a modded one.

Like others have said, if you're not into unlocking and OC'ing then either the 6800gs or the gto16 are good card out of the box. If you want to mod the card, then I'd get the gto2 because they unlock 100% and are great at OC'ing also. The only other card that might unlock is the connect3d gto, but lately there have been many reports of them not unlocking.

Those are the 2 cards I've narrowed it down to.

get the gto one, beefier cooler ;) . sides, gto and pro basically has the same stats right? one is higher in mem, while the other is higher in core...basically balances out. just get the cheaper of the two, saves you trouble of rebates too.

Neither. Those two choices suck. Get the Powercolor 16 pipe GTO, since its essentially a X800XL. or get a 6800GS. I like ATI cards a little more and the X800XL is a fine card, especially for AA.

Definatly the GTO fireblade, thats the exact same card I have. It has a R480 core with 12 pipes and it can overclock really high. I Got mine up too 636/615 without artifacts. And if you only wanna OC a little use ati tool and go around 570/570

yea, I mean I can get a gto with 128mb vram of newegg for 129, but is 256 really necessary? For many benchmarkings of mid range cards with 128mb vram, I have seen then doo quite well under strain.

LOL, the Powercolor 16pipe GTO is basically a x800XL. 16pipelines and virtually no overclockablility. Look at the Sapphire x800GTO in my signature... I just got it to 639 (no artificating)/1250 today :)

although, I may just be lucky.

That's about the speed of an OC'ed 6800GS.

When they're both overclocked hard and the x800GTO is unlocked, it's like comparing an x850xtpe to a 6800ultra.

The x850xtpe wins out in most games / tests, but 6800U has features that the x850xtpe doesn't. In the end, you're well off with either choice. I'd personally go with the 6800GS, just because OC'ing is almost always good, and the x800GTO is more of a hit and miss.

FYI - C3D x800GTO if unlocked / overclocked will hit about x800xt specs. x800xt core.
Sapphire x800GTO2 if unlocked / overclocked will hit x850xtpe specs. x850xt core.

If you are not into overclocking or unlocking pipes with BIOS flashes, I'd say near $200 6800GS PCIe is the way to go. I dont want to discourage you from unlocking and overclocking. But maybe if you are somewhat inexperienced, it might be a safer bet to go with a guaranteed faster card for not much more $.

Yah the review from Anandtech, its a stock GTO, it dosent really take into accout on most 12 pipe versions you can get the core and memory to around 590 or 600 mhz. Same with that GTO roundup they did, only overclocked the core to 525? Whats with that?

That also isn't comparing the XFX GS which is clocked at 485MHZ v 425MHZ for the unit reviewed- and that part also tends to have a bit of OCing headroom. The OP seems a bit hesitant in terms of OCing or flashing the BIOS and the XFX 6800GS will absolutely destroy anything close to its price point if you remove those elements.

It appears that the newer cores aren't nearly as OC friendly as the initial batches were.

<- nods in agreement

It may be an older core. I'm sure you can still find parts on shelves that are extremely OC friendly- but they seem to be less common now then they were a few months ago.
