I will guarantee you this approach will vastly outperform buying any $300 card today, especially at 1440x900. And if you sell your obsolete hardware you might even be able to stretch that to 4 generations of midrange performance cards -- as much as 8 years of gaming.
This is the best advice so far, LW07. BTW, in his last paragraph, he meant that a $100 card next year will be as fast as a $300 card today, and a $100 card two years from today will be alot faster than today's $300 card.
edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I've got an 8800GT in one of my systems, and it runs Crysis
very well @ 1280x1024, which is just a hair higher resolution than you're running.
