What version of Winamp to install?

For an undetermined reason I'm not hearing MP3s on my Lenovo T60 laptop. It has XP Pro and the latest Windows Media Player. Windows sounds I hear.

Having no idea what to do about it I figure that installing Winamp will likely work around the problem. I figure it's not wise to just install the latest version of Winamp, but rather something pared down, that won't hog resources and is well behaved. Can I get a recommendation?

But when I was doing that I was getting messages that the version I was running wasn't secure (2.81, 2.83, 2.95... one of those, I think). Is that BS and I should turn off the messages (option in Winamp, I think)?
 
winamp 5 is still very lite on my system. hardly uses any CPU, and if you have more than 1GB of ram I doubt you'll notice it running whatsoever.

Yes, I'm running Winamp 5 as well, very light on the system.

Yes, VLC is another great option. I play my movies on VLC and music on Winamp.
 
Downloaded Winamp 5.551 Full (almost 10 mb). What options do you people install? I don't want a graphic light show. I always run Classic, do you? What's the Signal Processing Studio plug-in? Winamp Agent?

Why do you use Winamp for audio? Just looking at the feature set of VLC, it should be able to play audio as well/

winamp agent is just something that runs in the system tray.

i never install this, i don't like too many icons sitting in my system tray. Winamp opens fast enough, I don't need it 'preloaded' or whatever reason agent serves.

i always install winamp "lite"

I have to admit I left winamp when I switched to Vista - had some problems with it back then, went to foobar, never looked back

I was getting messages about security problems with 2.x Winamp. I used to run 2.8x and then 2.95. Are those messages unimportant? 😕
 
I've been using AIMP2 for the last few months, a bit leaner than Winamp.

AIMP2 weighs in at a mere 2.88MB, has a slightly smaller memory footprint than Winamp and can do just about everything you want except sync with a portable device. It supports anything from AAC to WMA, allows you to record radio streams, has a fully fledged library to organize your music, allows you to manipulate playlists while listening to another, and even supports a number of Winamp plug-ins.

By that I guess you mean Winamp Lite, latest version? 😕

It's not something I do much on my laptop (I already use Winamp on my PC), but I use Winamp on my PC partly because it works in tandem with the MP3 file splitting freebie I've been using for years. Play the MP3 in Winamp, hit pause, and the utility will split the file there. Supports multiple split points. Damn thing (Trackmaker 1.2) screws up a lot, though and I should find one that's more reliable.
