What version of Photoshop?

The only reason I'd go for anything older than CS4 is if I could get a great deal on a legit license.

I wouldn't go earlier than CS2 in any case.

The last version of PS that I like is CS3 and really if I could get it cheap I would get CS2.
To me Adobe products are getting more and more bloated, installing things I don't want.
CS2 can do just about anything CS3 can.

There is no such thing as older than CS4...

I went from CS2 to CS4, and I like CS4. I've used CS3 a little also, and really, there isn't much difference between them all.

still using Photoshop 6. works great. really fast.
i tried CS1 for a while and found it unnecessarily bloated.
...like everything else made by Adobe.

I'm using CS2 and it works pretty good for me. I think I agree with Modelworks, CS2 can do most of what CS3 does.

There are really only a few nice features in each sequential update. The huge difference between CS2/3 and CS4 is the support for 64 bit as well as utilizing your gpu heavily.

Really.

Maybe you perceive time differently than me - I'd say ALL other versions are older than CS4.

Back on topic, I'll generally agree about bloat with Modelworks - but it'll really depend on what your needs are, and you didn't outline them beyond using xp.

to me 7 CS3 were so simlar they were interchangable. basically a few filter changes and what not. CS4 is a very nice upgrade though and runs better than CS3 did with very large files on my system. if you have a decent graphics card CS4 is very nice

Dare I suggest version 2.6.6? (I guess so, since I posted this.) 😛

To be honest, I don't use either one (GIMP or Photoshop), so I have no idea what's best for you.

only a graphics professional needs Photoshop. for basic image editing, both Paint.Net and Gimp are enough....and best of all, they are free.
