What vehicles qualify as...

At work we've been talking about vehicles purchased to "compensate" for something (men) or "penis envy" (women).

The great big SUV's (Hummer, Suburban, etc) are obvious. I was thinking the Magnum as well.

What vehicles do you think are signs of compensating? Name the vehicle and why. I'd love to have a list... 🙂

EDIT (added my reply from below): The Magnum's over-testosteroned styling is obvious. Interesting how I see more women driving them than men.

If a vehicle is being fully utilized, then the owner is automatically excluded. How many Hummers are actually taken offroad regularly? 'Nuff said.

Keep 'em coming folks! I want a huge list!

Why would a Magnum qualify? Lots of interior room for people or stuff, reasonable mileage, still fun to drive (RWD/AWD).

Ford Excursion V10
F250/F350 Duallie Diesel's as daily drivers by single occupants (See this EVERYWHERE at my school, stupid ag hicks)

Porsche or Beamer purely for the brand name

Mercedes don't count because most of them are the older ones.

i dont see ANY vehicle really that "compensates" for something, they are all vehicles and can all serve their own purpose.

Ooh, I love it when people drive BMW X5's like they're the hot sh!t....till I see the little "3.0i" tag on the side. Wooooh, big man got the underpowered six-cylinder in an SUV  Some dipsh!t tried to pass me illegally in the city once in one of those, had I not let off the gas in my 165HP Subaru he couldn't have. Fvcking morons

You are awesome.

For whatever reason, the F350SD and Duallies are getting more common here. You can tell these things have never towed/hauled anything but the driver. No idea why, most of the streets downtown are barely big enough for an Accord to pass through.

The funniest one I saw was a 350 that was lowered to the point that the driver had to come to a near dead stop to go over a speedbump. Poser Mobile says he outta minutes, yo.

Viper or Vette I think would qualify. both are overly fast and built for nothing more than showing off.

I would not say that. Neither of those would I call something that is used to compensate. Having a fast car =/ trying to compensate for something

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. Both my uncles thought they were a blast to drive, which is why they bought them. Hell, I would love a viper or vette. The power in your hands and at your feet is unbelievable and they are for the most part, affordable. Aside from gas, I don't see a downside to owning a vette or a viper.

That is simple. Take all the vehicles that "Macho" men are too chicken to drive. Those are normal cars. Take the remaining list and you've got it.

I discounted Vettes because they're pure sports cars.

EDIT: Nevermind. Vettes qualify as well. Took a minute to think about it.

I'd say it depends on a few things, to be honest with you. Say a large SUV with a puny engine (as someone pointed out, an X5 with the 3.0L), to me, seems to be compensating. That is, you're desperate to get something, even though it blows.

Hummers these days are built on the same frame as any other SUV (taho frame i believe... or something similar)... which means its sh!tty. cant even go offroad. an h2 or h3 cant go off road like a real one, and those that do end up having problems closing their or opening their doors, because they twisted the frame. Id say SUPER overcompensation. The stupid bitches that drive these. My sister's friend's mom flipped one into the ditch on a icy snowy day because she felt she was hot sh!t and passed someone going the speed limit. So stupid.....

Don't be a moron. Your little diatribe makes it sound like YOU are the insecure one.

The great majority of drivers couldn't give two sh1ts about how much power their vehicle has, let alone their SUV. I'd like to know how you think they "drive like they're the hot sh1t."

Please.

Why would someone buy a car to compenstate for something? Thats total idiocy IMO.As far as I know, most people buy cars because they like them whether it be because they like the style/feel or because it was just in their price range. People don't buy cars to say "look at me"...

Its only those people who can't afford them that mouth off...

Exactly, and while I'm sure those who mouthed off will tell us about how they could easily afford any car they want, the reality is that they wouldn't be so bitter if they could.

Well duh the h2 h3s arent comparable to the military version. But they are majorly fun to drive offroad and what not. I've rented one for the dunes down in SLO and it was great. I've also test drove some at events that has "off roading" type obstacles. Again they are MAJOR fun to drive off road. However they're not practical for anything else.

I don't own one, or know anyone that does, but again they're great to off road with. Any proof on the doors not opening because the frame are bending while off roading?
