I think most people complain and blame others for their misfortune's in life, when it is their own fault.

The quote in his sig is from a man who champions many of those ideals, and I'm guessing it is Huntington that has guided his beliefs. I'm not sure if the academic community should be proud or ashamed that this man served in Harvard's school of government until his recent death. His work is very.... pseudo-racist, though I cannot personally deny my affinity with some of his conclusions. I must admit, I have only read Clash of Civilizations and Who Are We?

I think congress should be a group of randomly selected individuals from a pool of everyone with a bachelors degree or higher. They can decline the offer if they like, and another person will be chosen. They can stay in for 3 years, then they can either be re-elected to stay in, or we can opt to choose another person. The president should be chosen by popular vote from congress.

Legalization of gay marriage

I am "against":

Most abortions
Public smoking/intoxication
Any illegal immigrants or anyone caught hiding/employing one
Most foreign aid
Interference with other governments
Throwing money at education/welfare/etc to make them "better"
People who wear caps inside

These are very broad generalizations in some cases, and I am *always* willing to be proven wrong or to be educated.

I believe that the US Military and NASA should both be abolished, and that there should be a sort of Corporate Salary Tax at somewhere around $1 million per year. By that I mean that nobody should be allowed to earn more than $1 million per year. They should be forced to donate the rest to charities of their choice within the community, and they should be well-recognized for their achievements.

On the whole it is.

When polled, something like 80% of Americans said they would never vote for an Atheist. Only around 40% said they wouldn't vote for a black man.

Atheists are still less than 20% of the population in any study i've seen. It might be higher, but the fact that people feel the need to hide their atheism shows that it is still pretty unpopular.

Many people who are atheists would be ostracized by their community and even their family if they admitted it. It really depends on your social circle how big the backlash would be if you admitted it.

Group dynamics are interesting. When someone feels like doing something is just going to be a pointless sacrifice, they won't do it. But if there's a 'movement' built, people join.

Of course, the defense of such movements to develop 'movements' was specifically why the founding fathers protected the right to assembly in the first amendment.

The media, however, has largely replaced such meetings; you don't see people meeting with their neighbors in large groups to discuss issues, they all just watch tv.
