What type of time/project management software do you use at your work?

My boss wants me to look for a software that acts like a time sheet for organizing different projects. He wants to be able to see what his workers are doing and how long they're taking to do it. Can any of you guys point me to a decent software for a small business? Thanks in advance.

I have little experience with MS Project, but I think it has that type of functionality.

Microsoft Project is the de-facto standard but it is pricy. The company I used to work for uses it for all sorts of construction projects.

At my last job a co-worker made one for us to use in Access.

You start it up, enter your login info then a form came up showing all the current projects and other things such as lunch, break etc...

You clicked on the radio button next to whatever activity you were doing and it made an entry in the database with a time stamp showing what time you started that activity. As soon as you clicked on a new activity it made a second entry in the first with an end time then a starting time in the new activity, etc....

Pretty nifty for a free solution.

Access is hardly 'free.' Most companies just have MS Office Standard or SB, neither of which come with Access. Plus in any event you need someone to program the access app which is pretty archaic in and of itself.

i'm currently an Junior in the MIS track at my univeristy. at this point, no real emphasis has been placed on any specific project management software. i can however vouch that my new employer (for my internship) has a big stress on project. i've played with it and found it to be a bit clunky, but it seems to get the job done; not to mention i can't even name another project management package off the top of my head.
