The sound should be connected to your stereo amplifier with a simple 2-1 RCA cable (assuming no fancy HT system available).
Anyway, the Radeons seem like the best all-around choice for outputting DVD as of now.
But on a regular NTSC/PAL TV, the differences in quality aren't that noticable to say, a Geforce MX.
My Radeon 8500 (standard) does the job just fine. Comes with the cable, too. And an adapter to RCA plus a nice, thick RCA cable.
There's a thread on Hot Deals that had the 8500 retail for $160. That is a smoking deal!
As a matter of fact, that (and awesome 2d/3d) is exactly why I bought this card, to pipe DVD out to a TV. ATI's Hydravision software (comes with the card) allows you to make it happen.
That's a good question. I would like to know the answer to that, too. Myself, I'm moving to a barracks (read 1 room) overseas, and I'm gonna pipe my pc's dvd player to a tv (already tested it), and use my SB Live and Z-560s for audio, rather than pipe it out to a separate amp/stereo. I'm limited in the amount of weight that I can ship, but the pc and peripherals don't count against me, so that's why I'm going that route.
How about the digital out on the SB card? Can't that be used to send a signal to your amp?
The TV out on a regular videocard is not as good as the signal sent from a dedicated DVD decoder. Trust me on this. Or trust the anandtech FAQ on the subject. Try to get a Hollywood plus if you really want to do this, though the 8500 might be acceptable for occasional use.
yeah, see before u buy - I was disgusted by the GF3 tvout, in in the UK with a fatter PAL than most anywhere and u really do need a dedicated decoder to get near an acceptable svidio TV picture for long term viewing.
Dazzle Plus- Does that have everything, or would it be more cost effective to go with the
ATI AIW 7500- Since it does have a TV out and audio out as well... I want to know what is the
best way to get 5. channels to the receiver other than a dedicated DVD player. HElp!
My AIW tv-out is very good, I have it hooked to my 32" via s-video, it exceeds broadcast quality (DVD decoding), so if you can stand to watch regular TV, you won't have problems, its plenty good enough, its hard to tell the difference between the Radeon's tuner and my TV tuner.
I don't use the S/PDIF output, my z560's are just hooked to my soundcard(works great, but only 4.1), so I'm not sure about hooking to your receiver from the Radeon.
