What type of mouse do you use to game with....

Heh, I still have one of those as well! The only thing that's "bad" on it is that the woven cable cover is a little frayed at one point, but the mouse still works great. My only complaint about it is that it only has one side button so you can't do backwards and forwards in a browser. They eventually released another G5 model a year or so later that had two buttons.

If you use firefox or chrome (not sure if available on other browsers) download an addon called gestures. I use it all the time and never use the back and forwards keys on my mouse now.

Deathadder. Not very original, but it works great. Only complaint I have is the smooth sides make it a bit hard to grip during long gaming. I think my previous mouse was the old gen g7 and the grip on the side was perfect.

This is what I have as well. Simple, cheap, durable, and pretty good for gaming. I was looking in to getting another mouse that has more side buttons, but I can't seem to find anything that is both comfortable and has the buttons where I want them.

Is it bad that I'm still using a Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0? I think ever since Microsoft came out with their first optical mouse in the 90's I've been using basically the same type (ergonomic shape with two thumb buttons). I'm not into MMO's so I don't need a bunch of buttons (I basically only use one thumb for knife/melee attacks) and when I've played competitively online I never felt I was at a disadvantage. Certainly it hasn't affected any single player experience. Of course I know very little about mice so I might be missing out but right now I'm happy with what I have.

Of course not. If you don't feel you need it, who cares? It's based on your own comfort level. And even when I was into MMO's, my guildies who had the naga never really had an advantage over me for having a mouse with minimal buttons. I didn't even use the extra buttons on my mouse for any combat based functions. Proper keyboard bindings made it a moot point. Although I didn't really PvP seriously so maybe it would have mattered if I did...

That said, there's nothing wrong with looking at different mouses at stores. Even if you can't tell any precision/response benefit, they might offer better ergonomics for your hands.

I have the 1.0 optical on all my computers and have for many years. If it works, use it.

then got a G5.. hated the middle scroll button, would press right when I was pressing down, gave that to my wife.

G500 now, love it.

IE3.0 is historically one of the most popular mice that pros use. Don't feel bad about using it!

This. I have a Razer Diamondback 3g, and while I like it I haven't got any better by using it instead of my old $10 logitech. I do like how it's soft though, and the scroll wheel has held up well. Actually, it's a few years old now and gets extensive use every day, and it still works and feels exactly like it did the day I got it.

This is what I use as well because my fingers are somewhat long and I like to keep my palm on the back of it. That mouse is long enough for me to keep my palm on the back and my fingers flat but not extending further than the front of the buttons.

Anyone know of any mouse that is as big or bigger than the X5 Sidewinder?

The whole MS Intellimouse series was great, in terms of design, but they kept failing (often inside of a year). If it still works, keep using it. If you really like it, have it serviced when/if it starts giving problems.

Emphasis added. All of mine died by cord. All my friends' died by cord (everybody had some variety of these, 8-10 years ago). That could be repaired, of course, if you wanted to take the time.

Now, why the cord would wear so much, even with plenty of slack, I don't know.

I already replaced my cord on one, and I find that a non-issue personally since I work on such things a lot anyway.

That does explain the seeming difference in experience, though. I consider that just normal maintenance of any long term mouse.

I've never had to do with other mice, including really old Logitech Optical Mice (on them, the switches start going after 5-8 years), and various IBM branded mice (no idea the OEM, but they are going to die solely obsolescence ).

switches are a royal PITA to replace.... to put it lightly. cords? easy peasy for me.

I have had to replace cords on just about every sort of device except for playstation controllers, no idea why they are so reliable and bulletproof but they are.
