What are you attempting to light? Plants/algae needs a certain spectrum (as posted above) to grow and photosynthisize...

Green light? Ah because plants reflect green.

What about black lights that they use to kill stuff in purifiers?

Black lights are different than germicidal bulbs.

What are you looking to do?

I have an auto-watering system for my rats, I went with the clear tubes so I can see when/if algae builds up. It takes a few weeks for any noticeable amount to build up, but I was hoping to use different lights to slow the growth (incandescent, vs fluorescent, etc)

But then I was also wondering if leaving a UV light or something on for the time that normal lights arent on would help kill or at least inhibit growth more than no light?

UV is bad for animals? Or will my rats turn into ravers and start popping X?

Prolonged exposure will destroy your animals' tissues. Unless you want to give them sunblock :p

It's still not a good idea.

Yeah I gathered :) So Im guessing black lights are bad for humans in large doses as well?

they might be covered in fur, but their eyes, and parts of their ears aren't. almost all soft tissue will get fubared over time with exposure to uv.

We covered this in a science class of mine. Exposure to excess UV rays can result in a myriad of problems. Stunted growth, abnormal offspring, disrupted mating cycles, etc. It really does a number on animals.

Use dark colored tubing. Check out the green Eheim stuff. It's also a serious tool to get someone to talk if they're being stubborn.
