As far as lifting weights, what type of lifts would help me build whatever muscle it is that gets strengthend by pushups?

Why don't you just do pushups? You don't need any equipment... ;) I think those butterfly things do it though.

pushups help you do pushups.

start off with sets of like 10 or 20 depending on which ever is a good workout for you and work your way up...

I swear to God I can't do more than 10 proper pushups. I did some last night and I can feel that the muscles tore and are rebuilding. I just wanna be able to do 20 without having to struggle like I'm constipated on the last one coming up.

The title says "what life will help me do more push ups" then you say "what lifts will help me strengthen the muscles that are used when I push up"

Well if its the first you can do no better then do more push ups. Hit 10 x 3. Take no longer then 1 minutes rest between sets.

Or you could just go for your max then the next day try to push out 2 or 3 more. This is what I did and I hit 75 after a bit of time. No problems. But now after not doing many push ups for a while I struggle to hit 50.

Bench pressing and anything else really won't help you to do *more push ups*. They will make the initial 10 or so push ups easier but you will still not reach your max amount of push ups no matter how many bench press's, fly's or whatever you do. If your GOAL is for 100 push ups. You need to just do push ups every day and try to increase by 2 a day. Doing more push ups is about muscle endurance not about how heavy you lift in bench.

But if your goal is to strengthen the muscles that are used then do the exercises.

Form is paramount, number one. If you lose form in any exercise, do not go on- you can injure yourself.
Secondly, do not train a bodypart that's still sore from last time you trained it. Every day doing pushups is too much, especially for someon starting out.
Third, no such thing as 'spot-training'. You will yield infinitel;y better results, prticularly in the fat burning department, with a ful-body split regimen.

If 20 is too many, start with 10 or 15, and work up to it.

Yeah, but don't just do benching. Balance it with rows so your shoulder doesn't get weird. I met a guy in the gym a while back who hadn't been in a gym in years and he was very strong and built. He said he did tons of pushups. He could do in triple figures, I forget how many he said. He'd just drop down at any time of day and do a ton of pushups and he was like that for years, so when he finally came in the gym he was bigger than most of the guys in there who were gym rats. I met another guy who was real strong didn't work out (so he said) but he said he did isometrics.

You are either one of two things: very weak and need to bench/do more pushups, or have a little excess weight and need to shed it so that your strength/ weight ratio gets better. If the latter, do some cardio to get rid of the excess pounds. Hell, do some cardio anyways.

You're right about the excess weight. I'm trying my hardest to shed some pounds.

Why are people here telling this guy to do bench press? He just wants to hit 20 push ups without struggling!

If he does bench he will want to work to the same durance as he does when he does get to 20. He would have to use a light weight. I'd say about 50% if that of his bench weight to get to 20 reps on the bench.

I know some very strong guys that could bench a lot. But they will definately struggle to do a lot of push ups. This is because they are not conditioned to go on for that duration of time.

It would be better for this guy to just work on push ups. 1 more a day and you can do it in a few weeks.
