What type of job should I get during college?

I get out of the Army right after I get back to the states and will start school in January. I get free tuition in Illinois for being a vet, plus about $1000 a month from my Montgomery GI bill.

So what should I do to try to make at least $1000 a month while doing full time school? I'd like to not squander my savings to pay for school. I'm an MP with actual time working as a cop as well as 2 combat deployments, and a Sergeant with plenty of leadership time.

I really really really dont want to work in a restaurant.

Bouncer, security guard, armored car driver? Best buy computer geek?

As a disclaimer I'm not really worried about real advice, just seeing if someone can think of something creative.

i'm not sure what you can do to make $1000/mo. but i was wondering if you get free tuition at all Illinois schools? or just the public ones? how about UI-UC?

Customer service. Sucks because you answer phones all day but its pretty much available everywhere and you usually get around $10-$12 a hour. That or be a waiter.

I suggest you find a local farm and learn something (even if it's commercial) about the prodcution of the earth on a lower scale.

If you just want to make some quick money plant some grass.

Go back as a military contractor and pocket six-figures a year.

the stores at shopping malls are always good. they usually pay minimum + commission + bonus. should be easy to get atleast 1000/month part time.

and if you find the right one, an an hour or two before mall closes, it's always not busy so you can use that time to study.

I've considered it. My wife already said that she'd go with me too. But it'd probably make me to old for ROTC which is still an option on my table. I still might consider it though. 2x100,000 on top of what I already have saved. is plenty enough to go to school.

I just get free tuition at IL public schools. Just a state program that they have for vets. As far as how many hours, really not sure. I suppose the first year would be fairly easy, but after that I'll transfer as a Junior to NIU and start taking harder computer science classes.

How about working at a gym as a personal trainer? With your army experience, how hard could it be? Those guys make pretty good pocket money.

Go ROTC at UIUC! Champaign is a nice town. AFROTC gives you a nice stipend of $350 during your junior year, then you could comission back to the Army through the blue to green program if you so desire. Lots of job opportunities around Champaign, especially if you have a car.

Security for a department store? My wife worked as a Loss Prevention Manager for Kohls for a couple years until she found a position with a local PD. I remember her having some part timers working for her that were going through college, and the company was willing to work around their schedules. I know she made a decent wage as full time, so maybe the part time positions pay decent as well.

If you are going to school full time, plus trying to have time for family, working more than 20 hours a week is going to be tough. Just an FYI, to pull it off you need over $14 an hour before taxes to get that kind of salary. If you work 30 hours a week you can do it for 9.50 an hour.

Just a few numbers to mull around the ole' noggin.

My choice was Home Depot and it helped a lot. Easy work, physical labor makes up for not having time for the gym, graveyard shifts with lots of time for studying, etc.

Cellphone sales. Nice commisons. I make $1400 a month working 15 hours a week.

I'm not a sales kind of guy, though working so few hours would still allow study and gym time so I guess if you can do it more power to you.

What did you do? Just restocking shelves?

Well, it doesn't pay a lot in cash, but you could do like I did... work in the girl's dorm at school.

It paid in so many other ways 🙂

Well... my "job" was to sit at the desk and keep other guys from coming in... help the girls w/ moving stuff, check in/out appliance type things (vacuum, etc.)... you know mentally stimulating stuff like that 🙂

But oh the perkies, I mean perks of the job 😉

seems like if you're a security guard that just sits at a desk you could study and get paid at the same time

Yeah, that's the real kicker... if you can get a job that allows you to study during it.

Computer labs are usually pretty good places to work at college. Typically, all you have to do is load the printer with paper and help some idiots with their MS Word woes.
