basically i find out next week if i will be staying in houston for a while...if i am, then within the next month i will probably get a dog

it needs to be a dog that doesnt need all that much exercise since i will most likely be staying in an apartment

im thinking right now of either a dachshund or a basset hound...

any suggestions?

Take a look at http://www.dogbreedinfo.com - you can search by different criteria, including activity level, and there is quite a bit of info on each breed.

Also, even dogs that are energetic often do fine in an apartment if you take them out and exercise them enough.

Yeah, but a video card isn't a living animal that you have to take care of and interact with on a daily basis.

A small dog is not always good for an apartment. They often actually need more exercise and have more energy than many large dogs. I would consider adopting a greyhound. They are great dogs. While Greyhounds like playing outside, they have very little body fat and thin skin, and are very susceptible to extremes of cold and hot temperatures. At the track, Greyhounds live inside in heated and air conditioned kennels. So between play or "potty" visits outside, Greyhounds need to be primarily inside house pets. While Greyhounds do love to run (and it's thrilling to watch them run), they need no more exercise than any other dog. A nice long walk on the leash three or four times a week is recommended. They are also pretty easy on allergies.

My girlfriend and I got a bassett hound back in Feb. Best dog I have ever had. Definitely the laziest breed of dog I have ever seen also.

Although she is lazy, she still enjoys to play every once in a while. Nice thing is that she sleeps all day while the girlfriend and I are at work.:)
