Skol vodka. Won some blind taste tests against top shelf stuff, but still very cheap. Maybe $12 for the handle.

Honestly when making mixed drinks I have few complaints about bottom self liquor.

I like a manhattan made with the cheap house brand bourbon and martini or gallo red. You could also mix it with coke if you like.
Cheap gin or vodka and tonic.
cheap vodka makes a fine cape cod and can be used with a generic coffee liquor for white russians.

If you're not drinking it straight or nearly straight like a martini, I see little return from spending the money on the big names, the subtle differences get lost in the mix of flavors.

at least vodkas, what often separates better stuff from cheap stuff is the number of distillations, which will reduce impurities in the vodka and make you have a "better" (not as bad) hangover

I got some Evan Williams bourbon/whiskey for like $12 a fifth, or Smirnoff for about $12 a fifth.

Just wondering what type of booze is good but pretty cheap. Need to pick up a few things but dont know what to get.

Sake is one of the things I will be picking up but what else shoot I shoot for? Remember, must be cheap and have a decent taste to it.

Seagrams 7 or Canadian Club are satisfactory (and cheap) blended whiskies, and taste good mixed with ginger ale or 7up.

Stoli Vodka is as low as I go on Vodka, but it's some of the best vodka for mixing. You can get a 5th for $18 around here.

stolichnaya is close to top shelf IMO, you can go a lot shittier for mixed drinks.

Ok so it seems that Vodka and scotch are a given.

Now I heard from a friend that you shouldnt mix clear booze with darker stuff and stay away from mixing hard liquor with beer. Is this true?

Also, 1990 in my name has no significance at all. Just ignore that for this thread.... ;)

Not sure, it depends on the individual. I can't drink sweet stuff, and if I mix too many different flavors, it doesn't sit on the stomach so well, but that's individual. I would keep from mixing too many strong flavors in 1 drinking session. If I'm going to the pub, I generally start with a Guinness or 2, then drink straight scotch the rest of the night. If I'm at a summer party, a lighter beer is my drink of choice.

For whiskey, get Canadian club - in NYC it's $23 for a handle
for vodka Tito's handmade - delicious and cheap (and american!)
for rum captain morgan's is as high as you should go
be wary of cheap tequila
