What tv should I pair with my PS3?

My 3 year old son has officially taken over the den. Gone are the days of the PS3 on my Samsung plasma television. My only other recourse is to purchase another tv/monitor for my desk in my office. I have read conflicting opinions on whether I should go with a flat screen tv or a computer monitor. Would you guys reccomend using a tv or computer monitor for my PS3? What specifications should i be looking for? If this question has been asked a hundred times, I apologize and would appreciate a swift kick in the right direction. Thanks in advance for your help...

I'd suggest either a flat pane TV or 16:9 computer monitor. You can run into scaling issues on 16:10 screens that make the graphics look blurry. Whatever monitor you buy, it should support at least 1080i input, but no higher than 1080p. For computer monitors, there are a few 1080p ones floating around. Here's a 24'' ASUS 2ms response time monitor for $240.

The 21.5'' 5ms model, same res, is $180.

If you don't mind not being able to watch tv, a 1080p computer monitor is definitely the best option. 360 and PS3 look very, very nice on a 22" 1080p monitor. Just saying. 😉

Do I also need the 120htz HDMI cable with this or can I get away with the 60htz one? Will I see a difference in the picture/performace between these two cables?

HDMI is HDMI as far as I'm aware. 60Hz vs 120Hz is solely based on the capabilities of the tv/monitor. A $3 HDMI cable from Monoprice will deliver the same signal no matter what.

the most expensive sony tv of course.

Do you mean... PS3 on... a JumboTron?! OH GOD YES!!

As for the HDMI cables, you really can't go wrong with what Monoprice has. They're cheap and the quality is excellent.

Would there happen to be scaling issues when using such a monitor with older systems like gamecube, ps1 & ps2? Say through a VGA box, even?

I just invested in one of those new Dell monitors, it's 23" and does 1080p. It's glorious. It can also be pretty cheap if you find the right coupons.

Yes. Its not unplayable bad, but its not nearly as good as a good TV with native resolution. To be honest, even on the 360/PS3 you can notice the scaling on 1080p TVs since the game is rendering at much lower resolution, but its much better looking than the previous gen.
