are you open to the idea of getting a projector? if so, try to find the sharp pg-a10x. it's a great projector and has a street price of under $1k.....

you could always get an infocus x1 for under $800 (after rebate)....

I'd like to get a projector eventually... they're pretty slick. Any problems with lasting power?

no, most projectors do not come with a built-in tuner. it would need to be hooked up to a video source (cable box, vcr, satellite....). You will also need to hook up the audio to a receiver, if you want decent sound.

Lasting power? The bulbs on the X1 last 4000 hours, which is quite long for a projector.

Well, I recommended the the projectors above, in part, because of their 4,000 hour bulbs. That will last me at least 3-4 years. Sure, it could go dim prior to that, but I'm hoping that doesn't happen. I'm also hoping the costs of bulbs goes down in that time period. Actually, who am I kidding....in 3-4 years, I won't own this projector anymore (the sharp listed above)....The way the prices have been dropping on these, I'll definately upgrade by then.

Average person watchs 3.65 hours per day. So if you were the only person watching, that will last you 3 years. (4000/3.65/365 = 3). At a price of $400, that is $133 a year for the bulb. Projectors are great, but the bulb price has been way too high for way too long for me.

Updated data: average American watches 4.35 hours per day. Thus it'll last the average American 2.5 years. That is $160 a year.

3.65 hours a DAY?
I'm lucky if I get that in a week... and it'd all be done watching DVDs!

I'm pretty sure you can get the Infocus bulb for under $300

Maybe you can, I just did a quick search and kept getting $450 after shipping. It certainly wasn't a thorough search. I edited it above, but that was average person data, not average American data. American's watch 4.35 hours per day. Thus even at $300 shipped that is a price of $120 per year.

Except the bulb on an X1 currently costs $260-270 and has been falling from the original $400 mark. Let's say the price dropping slows down and it costs $230 by the time you buy it.

That's 5.75 cents per hour of use.

If you cannot afford a bit more than a nickel for an hour of use, you're probably not in their target audience. 1 Dime covers the average movie.

panasonic, mitshubishi, samsung, akai, phillips, pioneer, sony, hitachi, magnovox, etc

No one but a fanboi can say definitively.

Mitsu, Pioneer, and Hitach are probably the best in that list for CRT television sets. However, it depends on the model. There is no one best manufacturer. For instance, the latest Pioneer Elites are very very good, but Mitsubishi is able to get you the most resolution out of their 9" guns. Hitachi is good all around for the money.

There's really no simple answer for that unless you're a nameplate bigot. :)
