Imho the best buy on the used market for an SUV for REAL utility is a Ford Explorer.

Dirt cheap, lotsa cars available (Mercury Mountaineers too), repair costs are cheap compared to foreign cars, and they have good cargo space and are a good solid car overall. You can pick up a really nice 2000 for around $10k if you look hard enough.

Yeah, I would assume trucks to have fewer problems. My friends advise me to get a truck, but I need the comfort of an SUV. We do go on cross-country trips, and camping trips, and the trip is much better with a roomy backseat. I really don't have any hauling needs that would call for a truck (that I couldn't put in my SUV with the seats folded down). I never really understood the need for a truck unless you were a farmer or construction worker. :)

You can't beat the hauling capacity of a truck. A friend of mine has a wife and three boys. They go camping and use their dirt bikes just about every weekend in the summer. He has an F350 with the super crew cab and leather seats. It's one of the most comfortable trucks I've ever been in. The back seat is roomy and it hauls better than my F250. He has a camper and a boat he pulls when they go camping.

I just got a Double Cab Tacoma. I was really looking for something with the versatility of a truck yet the capability to comfortable seat 4 people while at the same time not being overly large. I don't do heavy hauling, and only really needed room in the back to haul snowboards, mountain bikes, camping gear etc.

The double cab Tacoma works really well for me and the back seats are suprisingly roomy. Keep in mind that the bed on the d-cabs is only 5 feet, so if you wanna move sofas and stuff, you'd probably wanna get a bed extender.

SUV bad. F250 crew cab good (cavernous interior, hauls/pulls about anything).

They're a pain to parallel park, though.

they're a pain to pay for, too (i sold mine last year & now i want another one).

When mine's ready for a replacement I'll bet I buy another F250. I've had it since September and haven't had a single complaint. Of course I'll be paying for it for a while, but it's been worth it and more so far.

I have a 1993 Dodge Dakota, and I like it. I would have liked a Durango or some other SUV, but I couldn't afford it. I pull a Seadoo with it, and of course, it does just fine. The gas mileage is pathetic (13 city, 18 highway) but I make up for it in low insurance costs and low purchase price.

My wife has a Nissan 4 door 4WD Frontier. Pretty good truck! But I recommend and drive a Ford PowerStroke F250 4WD. A real truck!

I have a Tundra. No other full size truck comes close in quality, IMHO.
You might try a Tacoma or maybe the new Titan, if your are a Nissan fan.
