Hi there hopefully you can help me out on this one.

Se my currently system set up below in signature.

What upgrade would I gain most of.

Geforce 256 DDR DVI to a GF3 or
change my hole system to a new AMD 1400/266Mhz processor and a new MB.

If you would go for the AMD what MB would you get??

Cheers,

Depends what your needs are mate. If you are upgrading soley because you aren't satisfied with your 3D/gaming performance of your current setup, then the GF3 will help you out more. However, for most other things I think changing the cpu/mobo and maybe ram/ps will give you more of a boost. But really depends why you are upgrading.

If you go the new MB route, then there's a good KT133A motherboard roundup on Anand's, which is probably ideal because then you can keep your 512MB 133mhz RAM. Or you could go DDR, but my research on those boards is pretty weak... however if you do decide to upgrade to a new mobo, there's plenty of info on these forums and on the web to help you out.

Thanks mate for the quick reply.

I dont really know what I am looking fore here. I have no problems with the 3D games part. I just whant a top notch computer.

The thing is now I am cable of getting the tax back on the hardware I am buying. But this will only last until end July. (I am stationend overseas).
So I recon its just to get an OK system with me back home. Maybe though, the best thing for me would be to go for the AMD way and then wait for the GF3 to fall further in price or???

Upgrading the processor with a Geforce isn't REALLY going to give you a huge performance boost. If you keep the CPU running @800 MHz all the time I'd say go for the GF3 now. It does almost everything onboard now anyways. I am running a Duron 700@800 with a GF3 and I get some nice FPS in Tribes 2 aka The System Hog. Good upgrade I'd recommend.

If you don't really need the upgrade now, but want to do it anyways, then going the new mobo/cpu route will be better long term like I said before. And like you pointed out, the depreciation on the GF3 will be more rapid than the depreciation on the motherboard and CPU. But whichever way you go, have fun with it, thats a pretty good system you go there.
