What to upgrade.....it's been too long

I do a lot of heavy HD video editing with Sony Vegas 8.0c. I would also like to get back into PC gaming with Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and others coming out/already out. I am pretty sure I would be ok with the motherboard, as it can take quad core chips. What do you guys recommend I upgrade?

* Cooler Master Elite 330
* Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H 780G motherboard
* AMD X2 AM2 5600+
* 4GB Kingston ValueRam (4x1gb)
* EVGA 8600GTS 512MB video card
* 2X Dell E207WFP 20" WS LCD
* CoolerMaster RP-550-PCAR 550wt PSU
* Logitech DiNovo Keyboard
* Logitech MX Revolution Mouse
* Onboard LAN/HD Audio

more memory would probably help if you're running a 64bit OS. a fast HDD would also be a large player in video editing.

otherwise, i think you know the obvious thing, upgrade the cpu to a phenom II x4. or x3 if you're more budget-minded.

Definitely GPU if you're getting back into gaming. Something like a 4850/4870 would fit well I think. Also later on you can upgrade your CPU to a PHII X4. Although if you do a lot of heavy video editing now and won't be gaming for awhile maybe you should step up to the PHII now and wait a bit for the GPU

I don't see any mention of what hard disk/s you've got in there - that could be a major factor in performance for HD video editing.

I only have 1 500GB sata 7200 rpm hard drive. I realize that a faster drive would really improve rendering and such. That is an option for me too!

Honestly... For gaming... CPu and Vid card... I'm about to make a similar upgrade myself. I'm going to be looking at a quad core AMD (not sure which, but this is a year out), and whatever a decent video card in about a year will be. Right now though I would say your video card is holding you back a bit, especially with dual monitors running on it. heck, I use SVP 3.0b on mine with little problems at all, and the main difference between yours and mine would be my 6000+ and 8800gts to your 5600+ and 8600GTS, and even then that isn't a great big advantage. If it was me I would wait a little bit as it seems like DDR3 memory is going to be coming into play with the newer AM3 sockets from AMD and similar sockets from Intel.

For video editing, especially HD, you should see a massive improvement by adding a second hard disk. Specifically, make sure you're always copying from one drive to another when encoding/editing, so that one is reading while the other is writing.

I didn't realize you had that rig in your OP ... 😱

The PhI 9600BE and PhII 720BE scores the same in most Sony benches and would be about 40% faster than your X2 5600+. With a little OC the 720BE (which would be better in games, anyway) would be sweet.

But that's $40 you won't have to put toward a second hard drive ...

I run a 9600BE (Gigabyte 780g) at 2.6GHz in my dedicated encoding rig with Sony and (other than a little operator error - lol) it's never let me down.
