Ok, so my 3 year old niece is who lives in New Mexico is coming to visit this weekend. I was thinking of getting her a present within the 50-100 dollar range but am clueless on waht to get. I dont want to buy her clothes.

Any parents of ~3 year old know any good toys in the 50-100 dollar range? any other ideas?

A big stuffed animal would be nice. You could get her some books as well, maybe some candy too. Maybe spend some of that money on taking here somewhere like the zoo or the aquarium

cant be something too large, because she has to travel back on the plane, and also she is only going to be at my house for like 1.5 days, so unfortunatly i cant really spend much time with her.

A toy gift certificate. Children that young love to be taken to the big toy store for them to pick out what they want.

LEGOS!

Legos are good for every kid. She may be a bit too young though. If you know she's mature enough, definitely, but a stuffed animal may be better if she's not.

I started playing with Legos around age three. Three is not too young these days, given that they're much smarter...

I was thinking something like this, but electronics for kids at the age of 3 are hit or miss..
No, no, no... ;)

(steps up on soapbox)

Little kids do not need electronic toys. Little kids need toys that let them use their imaginations. Toys for kids should not just entertain them, they should make them play! Three is an age where imagination is blooming and we should be encouraging it at every step.

Work with this theme: little kids like little toys. As cute as they look with the super-gigantic stuffed bear, they really like playing with toys they can manipulate in their little hands. (Not so small, however, that the toy has too many detachable parts that can be swallowed, or that they can?t re-attach or re-dress by themselves.)

(steps down from soapbox)

Some suggestions:

Toy dishes - You can find toy food to go with them, which is also fun, but you don't have to since kids are adept at making up food from their other toys (necklaces = spaghetti, etc.) Choosing the food can be its own game. What should this red block be? (apple). This yellow one? (macaroni). It's interesting to see what they decide.

Small characters or animals, something like these My 3-year-old niece has about a million little toys like that and is playing with some of them all the time.

Or a small playset (While my niece adores her doll house, it would be extravagant price-wise and certainly too large for the plane.)

Or a couple of My Little Ponies and baby ponies.

Crayola Wonder markers or finger paint and lots of extra paper (this is the kind that only colors on the special paper, not the rest of the house). Markers and/or a small MagnaDoodle would be great for the trip home.

She might be ready for Candyland (the game).

I also like The Frog in the Kitchen Sink (book)

Even good, old-fashioned wooden building blocks or toddler legos (not the tiny ones).

Oh, and stickers. Everybody likes stickers.

Hope that helps! :)

Having said that, a modest toy gift plus books and/or clothes, or even something like themed sheets for a toddler bed or a themed (real) dish set (plate, cup, bowl, fork, spoon) might be another route if the child has too many doting relatives and thus too many toys.

What you get a child of that age is not as relevant as how much time you spen with her. So if you want to get an impressive gift get something that you think the parents will like. she's not going to care.

That being said, why don't you get her some books and READ them to her while she's at your house. That way she'll remember the experience.... :)

her parents are comeing from new mexico and are vacationing for 3 days in nyc.. they are only going to be at my home for a few hours if that... so i wont really have time to spend with her. plus we had to really push for them to even come to our house!.. tehy wanted us(familiy) to meet them in nyc... I would love to spend time with her but time does not permit it.
