This one i would have said:

What NOT to say-
Believe me, I know how you feel. I was depressed once for several days.

i guess i'm not really empathizing w/the person by comparing my short term depression w/that person's long term depression?

I believe there's a difference between clinical depression and 'being sad' for several days. Saying the above to someone who's clinically depressed will push them further away because it makes you sound insincere, like you really don't understand.

as someone who has sufferd depression i beleive there is a difference between being sad a couple days and being depressed. Now thanks to medication im happy go lucky, But a couple months ago without medication i was sad for weeks, almost a month, just felt like nothing was going my way, i made it bigger then it was but that's what depression does. It makes you feel like the world is out to get you.

Wow, weeks is enough to qualify as depressed? I thought it took years or something. Who the hell jumps on medication after just a month?

WTF? Are you seriously suggesting that someone with clinically diagnosable depression deal with it for years before receiving treatment?

It is not as if modern medical science has devised tests for determining most form of clinical depression or something right smart ass?

Don't say something like "I wish you would snap out of it already."
That doesn't help.

nope. many times the depressed person does not really know they are depressed. wich can lead to farther depression and very bad choices and consequences. really bad part is the person has to make the choice to get better

I did and continue to do so.

Cramming a pill down everyone's throat is not the answer.

It's not the answer for everyone, but it is the answer for some.

That's because the world IS out to get you. Get over it, is what I like to tell people :)

I always recommend thinking about how insignificant they really are in the grand scheme of things... so that no matter how big they fuck up, chances are it doesn't matter.

exactly.

depression is something to not be fucked with. if you need help and meds get it. the effects of it mess with more then just you. it extends to all your friends, family and work.

considering my medical problems and the shit im going through now it is something always on my mind. i do my best to stay happy and healthy.
