Hello,

I have an

AMD 64 4000+
PC3200 1GB ram
320GB 7200rpm Sata II hard drive

I would like to run ubuntu, and other operating systems flawlessly. Right now it's pretty slow.

So I was thinking how much it would cost me to upgrade to a Q6600
any suggestions? Should I get a faster hard drive too. I would like to do it as cheep as possible.

Presumably vendor sites would be the place to look for prices. What aspects of Ubuntu do you find slow on your current system? I would think it would run Ubuntu pretty well.

You need more RAM, and more processor cores. And yes, the virtualization tech used in the Q6600, along with the extra 3 cores will help you tremendously.<< That's assuming you have the 2.4 Ghz single-core 4000, and not the 2.0 Ghz X2 4000.

I would have to get a mobo, ram and the Q6600. How much would that run me. Oh an I would probably need a different heat sink. I have a 350W powersupply is that okay?

If you don't have some beast of a graphics card, it should be ok... But depends on the power supply, I guess.

Hmm... Do you live near a micro center?

If Yes, they're dumping Q6600s for $200.

If not,

Q6600 $270
4GB DDR2-800 $80
Nvidia 630i board $70

And a better heatsink $20-40.

So about $450 total.
