at least 16 gauge for longer runs

good speaker wire feels "soft" and not hard and bendy like cheap wire

i'd probably suggest going to an A/V store and just getting some entry level monster cable...not the really expensive stuff, but what you think you can afford (usually it's $ per foot)

the smaller the gauge the more expensive the wire gets...so smaller is better?

smaller gauge gives you a thicker wire, which is therefore more expensive.

for computer speakers, though, you really don't need much thicker than 16 or, at the most, 14 gauge.

Just another vote for going with Monster Wire. My whole entertainment system is wired this way. Its not cheap so make sure you buy enough length the first time so you don't have to scrap any. The THX certified studio uses this wire because it has the best quality for sound.

You might want to try an electronics supplier like Allied Electronics or Newark. A bulk spool (250') may not cost much more than much shorter lengths at a stereo or specialty shop, especially if you can split the cost with some friends.

Good Luck,
