What to look for in a GPS?

I bought a Garmin widescreen Nuvi w/free traffic back in 2010. it doesnt have free lifetime map updates.

i live in the DC area and i need an updated map because of all the construction around here.
but i think it's better to buy a new GPS than spend $69 for a 2012 map.

so what's new in GPS?
What are somethings to look for and what features to ignore/avoid?

and recommendations?
 
Get a smartphone and use the GPS that comes with it. Android phones have a pretty good navigation app, and Nokia's new windows phones look to have a good one too.

Of course, reception isn't as good on a phone as a real GPS (especially if you put an additional antenna on a GPS), which might matter if you're in DC proper surrounded by buildings.

Tomtom (and probably other vendors) have GPS's with lifetime map updates, cellular connectivity, and live traffic updates. But they cost quite a bit, it's easier to stomach when that package is part of a smart phone.
