I feel the guy is going to be a major mentor of mine. The guy does what i am interested in so i need to make sure i am in his good books cause i want him as my coauthor of a paper i am writing for next years enviromental conference. He invited me over to his house party (not all students were invited) - but there are going to be faculty and staff from other departments there. This guy started teh department in 1972, he is retiring after 33 years..

I'd say get him a book on Enivironmental Science but I'm sure he has a huge collection already, would be hard to get him something he doesn't already have. A gift certificate to a bookstore would probably be tacky. If he camps a lot (I don't know what the hell ES majors do) maybe get him something for that

I don't think I'd get him something related to environmental stuff. If not an episode 3 bootleg, I don't know what.

Maybe a bottle of wine, some decent bottle of Pinot Noir is trendy enough to get you brown nose points

that's what I was thinking. You need to get to the store :Q
Just find a white wine for ~$20.
I was impressed by Fess Parker's Melange Blanc, but it's more like $12, I'm not a wine guy, and the novelty of a small California vinter is probably lost on a Californian, unless the guy happens to be a Tarzan fan.

Don't forget the fancy little gift bag/tissue paper.

If it's not too late, I'd write up a Cliffs Notes of a thesis that you plan on doing with whatever subject he taught. :D
