Price range?
You could always get a gift certificate at a home furnishing place like House2Home or something like that. Or a nice lamp is always good. I was going to suggest a toaster or a blender until you said they have been co-habitating for several years. Another idea is picture frames. My wife can never have too many picture frames.

Gift certificate to one of those Linens 'N Things-type stores. The guy, of course, would love a BestBuy giftcard or a Sears gift certificate (tools! tools! tools!) but wedding gifts are just to make the woman happy. He'll be happy cause she's happy and they'll be your friends forever. Until they get divorced, then neither one will speak to you ever again because whenever you talk to him, you're taking his side and vice versa. Been there, done that. Lost about a dozen friends that way in one fell swoop.

I question those who live together for an extended period of time (more than 1 or2 years) and then get married. It messes everything up. Why ruin it?

Money. They need to pay their wedding bills. Wrap up a box to make it look all fancy, fill the insides with all these pretty curly paper, and at the bottom, some nice new crispy bills.

some people get offended when you give them money, if you want to get them a gift that is different then I'd buy then a year subscription to a newspaper, maybe a gym/spa, or maybe a beer club.

Fine, get em a 5-pack of condoms, a bottle of rum, and money. Hmm... they might not need condoms... Is she hot? If not, 2 playboys, 5 bottles of rum, money, and an "I'm sorry man" note.

If so... Pics?

A set of 2 engraved champagne flutes. One flute with the groom's name, one flute with the bride's name. Date on both. In a classy script font.

I used to be an engraver at the popular engraving mall chain Things Remembered. This set always drives them nuts.

A gift we got was great, but not really appropriate here...

A laundry basket filled with cleaning supplies. 'Cause, you need a laundry basket once you get a wife. Cleaning stuff, casue who buys it??? My bud even threw in a bottle of 10W-30, casue all the other stuff was "for the wife"
