What to Eat and See in Toronto & Montreal

The girl and I will be in Toronto for a couple of days and I was hoping to get some intel on what are good local joints to check out.

We should arrive in the afternoon of one day so will be looking for lunch and dinner the first day and a breakfast and lunch place for the next place. We are staying in at the Sheraton Centre Toronto, which probably has a breakfast thing going on, but if somebody knows of a 'better' local place then I am all ears.

Thanks ATOT!

Edit:

We are also staying in Montreal for a few days, so if there are any suggestions for Montreal I would appreciate that as well.

Yes.

The girl and I will eat about anything. After a quick Google search I came across an article that Tapas are become popular in Toronto and we both love tapas. Also love Japanese, Ethiopian, India, continental, seafood, and so forth. I'm originally from Texas and as such don't have too strong of a desire to try Canadian Mexican food . . . but if it's good, I suppose that's fine.

Really the goal would be to find a great local place irrespective of the actual cuisine.

If you want a killer souvlaki and good Greek food, hop on the Queen street car westbound (Queen is the street where your hotel is on) and get off a couple of stops after Lansdowne. It's not exactly the best part of town but the food there is amazing. 11 bucks for a large dinner, and you will be stuffed like a whale. Good quality food too. They also have good breakfasts.

You should also go down to the St. Lawrence market, they have a bunch of food stands and stuff there, that's on Front street and Jarvis. Go check out the distellery district and hit up the Mill St Brewery pub there. They brew their own beer and it's cool looking inside. Good beer and some descent eats.

The Beer Bistro on King just a bit east of Yonge is also good but a little pricey.

If you have money to blow go to the CN Tower restaurant, I've never been but heard they actually have descent food there, plus you get to go up to the tower for free (30 bucks value per person).

There is also a cool bar/pub on the main floor of this iron shaped building. Nice scenery and good beer/food too.

That's near the St.Lawrence market on Front Street.

There's a bunch of other places but non-downtown, too far for you to travel.

There are also a bunch of Korean BBQ grill places on king and queen streets in the entertainment/club districts. You sit down and cook your own stuff, all you can eat, it's pretty cool.

If you take a walk down Front street, queen street, and king street, generally west of yonge, you will find a lot of places.

Oh and if you end up going to Stavros tell them you know Peter the Polish guy and you will get hooked up 😉

Dude, that's right dead center downtown, more places than I can count.

For lunch, you could go 3 or 4 blocks to the west for a nice Japanese place (gotta reserve though since place is small and lots of workers go there). It's called "Fune" on Duncan St. Went there for lunch a few months back, great stuff, awesome bar setup.

A few blocks over at Roy Thompson Hall on King Street, there's a great Greek place called "Penelope's". Been there twice, loved it.

If you go North East to Yonge-Dundas, they just opened a supposedly good Chinese Buffet in the Futureshop/AMC Theatres building. If that fails, you can go up/down a floor for some Jack Astors. Or go in the Eaton Centre and have fast food.

Otherwise, cruise Queen Street and King Street for bars/restaurants close to your hotel.

Yea you can also check out the Pickle Barrel at Eatons Centre. Pretty original cuisine and the prices won't kill you. But like Imp said, you are dead centre downtown, so many places 🙂

I'm a big beer guy so I can also add the Bier Market to the list, they have a few locations downtown.

Awesome info, thanks a bunch!

We really like beer, so that Mll St. Brewery sounds fantastic. If you know of any other brew pubs let me know!

We are going to be driving in - this is part of a honeymoon road trip and for the next leg we are going to be driving on over to Montreal for a couple of days then back down into the States to stay over in Bar Harbor Maine for a few more days. Anyhow, we will have a car so if there is some place that is outside of downtown that is a must-see, we have a vehicle.

Also if you have any advice about driving around in Canada I would be eager to listen. The only time I have been to Canada was up to Niagara Falls for an evening so that really wasn't too much of a significant visit.

I was hoping it was a good location - got an amazing awesome deal (in my opinion) on Priceline for that hotel. However I didn't want to get there and take time to figure out where to and where not to go.

Yea def check out Mill St then, it's really cool inside. Beer Bistro is nice too, they have a really nice setup and it's very cozy inside, but be warned, it is pricey.

If you are heading down to Montreal I frequent there every few months for a week just to relax and unwind. I recommend staying somewhere downtown as that is where the attractions are. The old part of town is awesome and resembles European towns very closely. Narrow streets, cobblestone, etc, very cool and romantic.

There is a chain of bars there called http://www.les3brasseurs.ca/ which brews their own beer and has cool food etc, worth checking out, they are everywhere.

This place has awesome Portuguese food to eat and is very cool in Montreal, it also won't break your wallet.

There is nothing special about driving around in Canada, don't speed and you will be fine. 50 km/h over in Ontario = $ 10,000 fine and your car impounded for 2 weeks.

As for seeing stuff in Toronto, downtown pretty much covers the main/nice attractions. Check out harbourfront, cherry beach, park lawn, and that whole strip along the lake, it's basically one long park that stretches. Makes for a very nice walk wherever you are. Downtown is cool, just go explore. Check out chinatown, check out little italy on college, check out the Polish area on Roncesvalles. hmm which reminds me, if you want some crazy good Polish food, best in TO, here is the place to go to, I've been going there for 19 years.

Montreal is nice too, just explore downtown sector. I also recommend passing by Quebec City if you are going towards main, it's a really nice town, the most European place you will find in Canada.

I completely forgot about Little Italy. Lots of nice restaurants (Japanese, Italian, various bars/lounges) west of College and Bathurst St. It's about a 10 minute public transit ride, or 30 minute walk from the Sheraton (not much parking in area).

Yea bro, the best way to explore downtown IMO is on foot, but if not hop on the streetcar and get off to whatever catches your eye.

Oh and there are tons of middle eastern joints downtown offering falafels and Schwarmas (sp?). You will notice them by the big round stacks of rotating meat you see in the window. 4-5 bucks will get you a fresh chicken schwarma 😉

Thanks for the information I appreciate it.

No problem, let me know if you need any other info 🙂

Food at the CN tower is excellent, but it is indeed expensive, probably $150-200 for a full on dinner for two, appetizers and a couple of drinks. If this is something you can afford, the view is fantastic.

I've always been a fan of the Old Spaghetti Factory, though their menu is fairly basic Italian and you didn't mention a taste for that.

Other than that I kind of agree with the guy who said 'go wandering and see what catches your eye'. There are far more than 4 good restaurants in the city, so you won't run out.

All the restaurants on the street perpendicular from Yonge infront of Zanzibar are fantastic! There is something for any type of food there and Ive eaten at most of them. Barbarians if you want steak/meat, Oro for Italien I think? THere are like 8 restaurants right in that block and they are all just incredible.

We may go splurge and eat at the CN Tower - again this is part of our honeymoon trip so I think we can sort of justify splurging here and there. With that being said this is Honeymoon Plan B in that Option A was costing too much money so this is our 'cheaper' alternative.
