My brother just gave me his Powerbook G4 1.67ghz laptop. I have never used a mac and dont really know what to do with it. Anybody got any tips/tricks or cool things to do with it?

Have you tried dropping it off a building to see if it will bounce?

That would be cool, you could post it on Youtube.

DVD player for the kids in the car. Recipe computer in the kitchen. Or, send it to me and I'll put it to good use :)

It is still totally fine for web browsing or light office use.

pretty much this. it will probably choke on youtube HD or pretty much anything flash intensive though.

Yeah, it is almost totally useless for heavy flash-based content, esp. H.264 video. But it otherwise is OK for generally surfing, Word, Excel, and email. And it has a real keyboard, so it's not irritating to type on like it is on an iPad. You can also watch DVDs and stuff like that on it too.

For a browser, run Safari and Firefox, but consider installing TenFourFox.

Leopard will run pretty well on that thing, at least it did on my old 1GHz G4 PowerBook with 1.25GB RAM. Since you have never used a Mac before you won't have been spoiled by how things are on more modern Macs (two finger scrolling, which that one might have actually) lighter weight, ability to handle Flash, things of that nature. Also once you get used to the chiclet keyboard it is kind of hard to deal with the older style.

They aren't bad machines though so long as you know your limitations, which are the same that they would be with any other 7-8 year old laptop.

yea this one has 2 finger scrolling, already realized that flash is a terrible experience, I guess it'll get use as a general surfing laptop. Dropping it off a building would be a lot more fun though....hmmmm

I use my old iBook G4 as a file server. Just tossed a couple external drives on it.

What about Voyager or the Defiant? ;)
Voyager, being 70K LY from Earth is considered a remote niche market that Apple doesn't want to deal with. The Defiant is an ugly little ship, and has been deemed not worthy of using Apple equipment.:p
