Well ok I bought a dvd burner last night at work b/c it was a great deal with my hpinfopoints. I already cleared out a 4 gig clutter from my hard drive and freed up some space :D

I used DVD Decrypter to copy one of the dvd's in my collection and it worked perfectly. (not what I plan to do with it but I was curious about it)

So now I have a DVD burner. 5 blank dvd+rw discs. And can't think of a damn thing to do with it LOL

Any suggestions?

PS anywhere i can find blank dvd+r's cheap? i can only find dvd-r's cheap but cant find any good deals on dvd+r's / dvd+rw's

Return it and get your money back, wait 2 years until they're selling for $40 and media is cheap.

if its a dvd burner

why would you do anything with it

besides burn dvd's?

if it was a dvd burner/ toaster

you could make some toast with it

ROFL! Or.....or you could backup the Internet onto DVD-R. Should take what? Maybe two or three DVD-R's? :p

My suggestion? Time to hit the video store. You can't compare a DIVX rip to an "original" now can you? *DISCLAIMER* I am in no way, shape or form condoning the illegal copying, ripping, haxoring, faxoring or fuxoring of any RIAA/MPAA copyrighted and/or patented material. So bite me. :p

ps
I'd really like a copy of Monty Python's "Life of Brian". Thanks.! :D

Why the hell do you want DVD+R discs anyways? It's not the more supported standard. DVD-R is the one you want, as it'll play in way more set-tops, not to mention PS2s and XBoxen. :D

And if that's not enough hints for what you should do with that DVD burner, then give it to me. :D

i got it for free (after rebate)

and i have a 3 year best buy service plan so in 2 years when a better one comes out this one will happen to "break" and i'll swap it out for a better one *shrugs*

and yes i know burn dvd's but what should i burn? i've already got the data i wanted off my hard drive... i don't think it's worth it to go to the video store... $4 to rent one, about $4 for a blank dvd... I can buy a movie for $10-15 so i'd only save a few bucks doing it that way and it wouldn't have any extras/menus just the movie...

it's not really worth it right now to copy movies from a video store :-/

what else do u do with it? is that all?

no i know that's all you can do with it, but the only purpose is to illegally copy dvd movies or back up data off your hard drive?

ps i got the hp 200i 2.4x dvd+rw so i can only use + dvdr/w's. my dvd player can play all formats of cd/dvd so it didn't matter which one i got.

BTW, how'd you get HP points? Is it free to register? Are you an employee? Is it a retail perk? Do you have a link to sign up? How long did it take you to earn the points for the burner?

you have to work for a retailer that sells hp components

i work for best buy

then you register for free at http://www.hpinfolabs.com

take tests, get 1000 points per test, took 25,000 points to get the $300 rebate on the burner

bought the $300 dvd+rw burner from best buy (where i work)

mailing off the rebates today...

getting them in a month

the burner then = free :D

Get a netflix subscription and start ripping movies into DivX format then burning them to DVD+Rs. Since you can't fit an entire DVD on one blank, rip it down so you don't lose much quality and also take the 5.1 dd soundtrack too.

Why would he rip them down to DiVX? Why wouldn't he be able to fit an entire DVD on a blank one?

I haven't looked much into DVD burning, but I'm assuming you can't burn dual layers? A lot of movies are on both layers.

Of course I'm probably wrong.

If you can't figure out what to do with it, you could send it my way. I'm sure I can think of a good use for it. :D

The old ones might fit...but most DVDs these days are dual layer, effectively having twice the capacity at 9.4 gb. He'd have to burn two DVD-Rs and split up the menus in an image editting program so all the scene selection and stuff would be intact. A huge pain in the ass IMO. The other option is to get a double sided DVD-R and burn it that way, but even then I think you have to do some menu editting crap. Much easier to rip down to DivX. I believe if you keep the bitrate high, you can reduce the size by 50% and maintain more than 95% of the quality.

well, i have a pioneer burner (A04) and my main purpose was to backup my files and also to put our digital camcorder to use and burn movies onto DVD-Rs to watch on our home player. those are pretty much the only real reason why you would get a dvd burner.

i wonder....can you burn any DVD-Audio discs? probably not huh?
