give one to me...im have a piece of sh!t computer...and trying to run high mathematically involved programs on it for my graduate research...not only does the speed/memory suck, but it shuts down windows randomly in the middle of my work...

mmm hopefully i will upgrade next month if i dont do anything and save up my graduate student stipend, but till then...dont talk to me about extra computers

I recommend bsd variant of unix. I favor freebsd, others swear on openbsd. Redhat was just too bloated and inelegant after 6.2 for me. mandrake is a little easier to swallow but not much. Debian is nice. Slackware is too hard and time consuming to upgrade for newbies. Gentoo is ok IMO, but I stopped running linux altogether now as I don't mind just running the binaries on my bsd machine.

Workstation is still windows tho because programming in flash for *nix isn't very user friendly.

What is G@H?

genome@home ?

Also, I think the X server that comes with the latest 4.x release is broken on the cds. Just install from the ports collection or change the installation media to ftp instead of cd/dvd.

I have the same problem you have... I have two Athlon systems are currently sitting unused. One is a Duron 600 @ 900, 512m PC133, GF2 GTS, DVD, 32x CDRW, etc. and the other is a Athlon 1GHz @ 1.4GHz, 512m PC133, GF2 GTS, DVD, 24x CDRW, etc.

Both have at least 20 gig drives in them.

Currently have a Redhat 8 web/mysql/sendmail/php/samba server running on a 333MHz K62 Toshiba laptop. My main rig is a Dell Dimension 4500, 2.4GHz, 1gig of PC2700, 160gigs ATA100, ATI 9500 128meg, dual 19" CRTs at 1600x1200.

I need to do something with these... maybe I'll setup a Win2k domain and an MS Exchange server? :)

They do? Do you get any error messages or anything like that?

You might want to try burning the cdroms at a lower speed.
