So I got a couple of free computers and in the bounch I have a dell Dimesion XPS 133C

Specs

Intel Pentium 133 MHZ Non MMX
32MB RAM
4MB PCI Video Card
10MBS RJ-45\ BNC NIC
56K ISA Modem
CD-ROM
3.5" Floppy
Sound Blaster 16 ISA PNP
4.3 GB Hard Drive

is there any linux that will run on something this old? Or what else can I do with this machine?

Dell Page for the Documetion Mine has I and J so can I can overclock the CPU to 166MHZ and its a socket 5 motherboard

I have a old 200mmx system that I'm using as a speaker stand... 🙂

Everyone ask me "What's that ?" ,,,,, I just laugh and say it's a real solid speaker stand...

if you could scrounge up a lot more memory (at least another 64 meg, but really 128 total min) you could run a lightweight linux distro. If you run linux on it now it will be command line. Best thing for it now is to try freedos or win 95 and play old games on it.

Whatever you do, dont spend money on it.

stick a bigger drive and perhaps a faster lan card in it and use it as a NAS box.

try freenas or darmanas as an os.

Play Doom or see if WoW can run at 320x240 resolution 🙂

Or, hit some Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing on DOS. The driving game where, if you mess up on typing, a bug hits your windshield. That's cool!

I'd reccomend making a router/firewall out of it - personalyl i reccomend PFsense its built on monowall but has a ton more features, and has worked flawlessly for me.

also there is smoothwall, monowall, (www.m0n0.ch/wall) and tons of others.

Damn Small Linux will run on it, albeit not as well as you might hope 😉

Right now, i'm using my 75MHz system as a MAME machine... quite fun.

You could see if you can find another 32 or 64MB of memory and donate it to someplace, believe it or not there are lots of places that would kiss your feet if you gave that thing to 'em, even without the memory. As long as it has 98 on it and at least 32MB, it's useful for basic book keeping and learning to type and stuff.

Warcraft 2 still works great with this machine 😛
is selling the parts out on ebay considered a constructive move? Rather then paying space for it

If you need any extra storage space add a large HDD or 2 and try FreeNAS, makes for a very nice network attatched storage solution.

While PFsense is a great router/firewall setup with lots of features, it needs more ram and a faster CPU. Monowall will run very well on that old Dell however.

The most constructive thing I can think of is to do what I do with all my past computers - give it to someone less fortunate than you.

I can't imagine that being a Socket 5 motherboard if you're able to clock to 166mhz. If it's socket 5 then the max would more than likely be 133mhz, if it's socket 7, max can be anywhere from 233mhz/200mhz to 400/450mhz depending on what kind of board you have. 166mhz max clock seems odd, do you know what the FSB would be if you were to set it to that speed?

Give it away to a needy school in a bad area of town.

they prefer apple computers and macs.

besides that, most low end computers would be a Pentium 2, and even the Pentium II's are being replaced.

I'd sell the computer at a yard sell for like 15-30 bucks.

I wonder how much a Pentium 66 machine is worth...?
