Okay, so over the weekend, me and some of my buddies were driving around town, and we found a beer keg. We threw it in the car and took it home, and there was a little beer in it, but we drained it, since it was probably very rotten and old. I guess my question is what to do with it. My mom doesn't particularily like it sitting in my room, after all I'm only 17. I understand that there are deposits put down on kegs, would I be able to return and get the money? If so how much is a typical deposit? Would the distributor have issues with a 17 year old returning it? Who distributes Molsen in the Oxford, Ohio (Miami University) Cincinnati, Ohio area?

Thanks!!

Sorry don't know about Ohio but I think you need a receipt to get your deposit.
If nothing else you can turn it in for the value of the aluminum at a recycler?
Anyways if it was still full I would've suggested you bring ot over here ;)

I've seen people cut them in half, put a couple hinges on them, and turn them into grills :)

Or, you could go steal a big ass stop sign, slap it on top of the keg, and have a kick ass portable card table :)

Or, you could just do the customary KEG TOSS! :D

All the places I know of require you to have a receipt in order to get your deposit back.....usually like $75. Trying to return it probably isn't a good idea since you're significantly under age. You can try to Ebay it or keep it and make a "kegerator".

You should be able to return it for a deposit, but it depends on the state you're in. I say screw it, and turn the keg into a lamp or some other useful peice of furniture.

The grill idea is pretty good, too.

I like the stop sign idea...I'm a big euchre fan, and that could be fun. I'll aim at doing that and I'll post some pics when I get it accomplished. Thanks for the ideas!

How would my popularity increase in college? I can understand if you had beer, but an empty keg. Give me some explanation. I would agree, that the attention that I have recieved so far is good.

really? i've taken back probably 6-7 dry kegs (in ann arbor and east lansing) and never been asked for the receipt. usually, the deposit you get back is $10, but of course it varies.

-------------------
sample keg receipt
-------------------
price for keg...........$50
deposit for keg.........$10
deposit for beer tap....$10
---------------------------
total = $70

obviously, the last 2 are refundable when you bring them back, so the keg's net total is around 50 bucks.

anyway, as for the age limit, it's comparable to returning an empty beer bottle for the deposit (assuming it is empty). i could be wrong, but getting a ticket for an empty keg is absurd.

anyway, just take the keg to a few party stores and say you lost the slip. you might find a taker. i don't know about keeping it around, bartending skills and a dj can come in handy though. i like the grill idea though, that sounds like a cool project.

Bring it back to a store that stocks that type of beer in a keg.
And get the on average $50 deposit on the keg.

Im at ohio u in athens. All the distribs around here require receipts to claim money on deposits, mostly because of an incident where a party house set up a 27 keg pyramid overnight to show off and someone swiped em ALL!

FYI, keg deposits are $10 here, tap deposits are $50. Keg prices range from $45 for nattie/light to upwards of 150.

I just want to say please don't steal a stop sign. Think about it. Many people have died due to stolen stop signs on high speed rural roads, where the biggest stop signs are found.

The computer case idea is awesome. I'd give it a try someday if I foud a keg.

here at the HEB its $10 deposit for the keg, $20 deposit for the trash can, and they ask you who you are to get your money back. next time i get a keg i think i'm keeping it. and buying my own dasmed trash can. (that way i can keep the keg iced longer)

oh, and liquor stores are state-run in ohio, so it would be problematic, i think.
