New stuff coming in, out stuff going out! :) That means I have a Celeron 500 rig left over.
Onboard sound has crapped out.

Here is the plan:

Use it as a MP3 player connected to the main HiFi setup. For this I need a new cheap (but still OK) sound card. Cheapest PCI video card availible with TV-out.

What do you think?

That's harsh. It works.

Seriously though, why start buying new stuff for it? If you're going to buy sound cards and video cards, just buy a DVD player that plays MP3s instead of wasting money on obsolete equipment. Either that, or just buy a cable to run from the new PC to the stereo for sound.

I tried a cable from this rig to the stereo but there is a low frequency humming because the stuff is not connected to the sama outlet.

I have a Celeron 433mhz and 128mb of ram running apache, sql, perl, php, a thing to update dns servers with our ip, ftp software, the whole load of things for a few websites. As long as the websites are small, its more than enough. Even 128mb of ram for all those programs is more than enough because the things that happen a lot are in the cache, and others usually aren't needed. After a few days of running, I don't hear much if any hd usage at all.

I would reccomend an mp3 player or a web server.

Make a really good linux multimedia box out of it. Or send it to me, I need another box for a project.

I've got a bunch of cpu's I can't use and yet I am scared of the FS/T forum. I have 2 366Celerons that will run at 566 forever. I also have 2 1.7GHz Celerons that I have no use for. And all kinds of Alpha heatsinks that were so darned expensive.

If anybody needs a cheap boxed 1.7GHz celeron then I am your guy.

Oh yeah, I have a 1GHz P3 if anybody needs that too.

El cheapo system for one of your relatives in need of a decent computer. I'm about to give my mother-in-law my old Celeron 600@900 system to replace her old K6-2 350 system. For her needs (e-mail, surfing, MS Office, burning the occasional CD) it'll be more than adequate.

Granted, when you start building/donating systems for friends and family that's when you get sucked into the dreaded world of friend/family tech support.
