What to do with a 32" CRT?

I have a panasonic 32" Tau tv that works great but we don't need anymore. Tried to give it away, no one wants it. Even craigslist...only one person replied and requested to have it delivered. Local Goodwill doesn't even want it.

Putting it out as trash is almost unthinkable. I'm thinking maybe a school might find use of it..

Any ideas?

Trash it, why would a school want it? CRTs are terrible, huge power drain, you cannot move it by yourself and they have a HUGE physical footprint.

It's been sitting in the basement for nearly three years. It's about 220 lbs.

I guess I could keep it there..just seems like someone could use it. You know it's a bad sign when Goodwill doesn't even want it.

yea ouch, its a burden lol, its not like u can meet at the coffee shop to sell it, u gotta invite someone in and cart it off if you can't move it yourself...

what a pain😛

Yes, I know. We still have 2 Sony 30" TV and one 36" Sony. The 36" weighs over 200 lbs and due to it being ackward with no handles, takes about 4 people to move it. All the TV's play excellent, but since we got our big screen we don't watch the 30 or 36'ers. They are just taking up space in the basement. I think our trash service has a 'large pickup' day once a year. I will contact them to see if they will pick these up.

lol i sold mine 6 months ago to a buddy for 50$ he still uses it

was an upgrade from his 27in standard tube TV

You might see if a local fire or police station would want it. I had a 36" CRT and donated it to my friend's fire department. They still use it to this day.

Keep putting it on craigslist. Someone will eventually want it. Put it in your front yard with a sign that says "free".

Nah, while really nice CRT's (Sony Trinitron, some rear projection sets) are worth it to keep around - pretty much anything that isn't the high end of the CRT era is essentially useless.

Honestly unless you want to plug in a Genesis or super Nintendo or something to it, the best thing is to grab 3-4 of your buddies, get em a 24 pack of Coors, get em about 3 beers each and get that thing up the stairs. Next after a couple more beers (burrs), take in in the backyard and put it on a table. Next give everyone either a bb gun or a slingshot or shoot even a couple of bats. Office Space that bitch. Its VERY satisfying to bust in a CRT. All your buddies will finish the job of reducing it to a pile of glass and plastic shards that you can then put in a big garbage can.

It is trash. Nobody wants it, just get rid of it.

I had to get rid of my beloved 19" Samsung CRT monitor a few years back. I was clinging to 1280x1024 for dear life, but in the end it was much much better to just move on.

Every so often our City (or County?) runs a "drop off your old electronics/paint/hazardous materials" day. Contact your local government about theirs, load the TV into the back of a truck and drop it off. At most of those events, they will unload bulky items for you.

My primary TV is still a 32" crt. Fucking thing wont die. There's a 42" plasma in the basement that I never use.

We still have a 35" CRT Mitsubishi TV that has been pushed from being our kick-ass primary a few years ago to now serving us periodically in our bedroom. It just won't die, but when it does, I get to upgrade our current primary and move everything else down the line.

Are you looking to move that plasma?

No. It just sits on the wall, mounted up nice with all the cords running through the wall. I just never use it. I think I turned it on about 2 months ago to delete stuff off the TiVo that is connected to it. Other than that, it does nothing.

So, uh, are you looking to move that plasma?

I wouldn't bust that thing in your yard. That's a good way to contaminate your yard with lead and remediation is ridiculously expensive.

Find a reputable electronics recycler and have them properly dispose of it. We have a city sponsored pickup where I live once or twice a year and they'll take it off your hands for $10.

ya here they pay per pound on old tv's.. same people that recycle the cans will take it off your hands.. working tv 32" doesnt sound bad to me.. great for kids that like to bang on the screen (cant do that with a lcd ahhah)

I'm in the same boat. I have a 32" Sony Trinitron...made in 1991...still works great. The screen is flat, top to bottom but not left-right. Damn thing weighs 160 and has NO HANDLES, no place to put your hands, no "insets" or anything. It's a PITA to move and runs hot. And it's paid for. If I get rid of it I'd have to spend at least $1.2K to get a decent LCD or Plasma.

yea no kidding i tried to lift a 27" once, it wasn't the weight but the bulk and distribution of weight that made it impossible to grip.

i guess u could rig up some kind of custom rolling dolly thing though.

but its still spending money to get rid of something. in the end i waited for an electronic waste pickup day and left it by the curb. contact ur city or waste disposal folks, they do it once a year or so in some places.

Big difference - That ones almost worth keeping. At least till the phosphors wear out, which probably happened already but whatever.

Just because you break apart a TV in your yard doesn't automatically contaminate the hell out of it. You probably have lead paint on your walls. They just paint over it. The lead on circuit boards and inside the glass is not likely to seep into the groundwater or anything. Oh and lead occurs naturally in the ground already.

If you burn that somebitch, now we're talking issues.
