Hi,

Maybe this is completely of topic... But, here it goes.

I got 6 486DX2-66. Don't ask me where, why or how I got them.

I already have a Tbird 1.0GHz@1.47 (with Win XP) and a Cely 300A@450 (with Win 98SE), both being used.

Now that I got those 486, I don't know what to do with them.
Of course, I can always take them for reclycling and receive a couple of euros (yeh, I'm in Europe...).
But I didn't want to that 'cause all of them are running fine: 16MB RAM, 420 MB HDD and no CD.

I thought about install in one of them Linux.
It would be a nice pratical experience, 'cause I never did it and I wanted to learn Linux.

But that's only one !! What to do with the others ?

Regards,

Carlos Peralta

PS: BTW, I'm living in Lisbon, Portugal. Here the second hand market is vitualy non existent... :-(

- Beowulf cluster :D
- X-terminals
- send them to me (I live in Europe as well) ;)
- use them for spare parts

I still got a bunch of 286, 386 and 486 systems lying around. I use them for all kinds of stuff. Right now I'm in the process of converting two to X-terminals.

Other things you could do -

Use one as a firewall (if you have a broadband connection)
Donate to a local charity/learning centre (people can use them to learn how to word process/surf the net etc)

I agree with Mitzi on the firewall & charity suggestions.

My sister was given a 486 system (don't know the specs) a few years ago. She still uses it. All she does with it is AOL (ack!) but is completely content with it. Sure, she'd like to have a more powerful system, but a 486 will do e-mail and internet all day long! You'd be surprised how many people that have nothing would like to have an old system like that just for e-mail and internet.

Since they're 486's a school may not want them but any sort of home for seniors will. One of the hot new things to keep older people active and mentally alert is to get them logging on to the Internet. Those 486's would be great for that.
