What to do when PSU doesn't let PC go to stand-by mode

I replaced the stock power supply in my dell dimension 4600 with an Antec 480W one and now, it won't let the PC go into stand-by mode. It won't power down. The PC gets stuck if I enter stand-by mode and I have to hard restart the PC. Also, I have a new video card attached to the power supply which also does not power down (fan) when I attempt the stand-by mode. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Don't put it in stand-by. Have it hibernate instead.

Look at the Dell Add-on connector, note it has a 3.3V, 5V and 12V feed (place cursor over it).
Does your Antec offer that connection? Did you use an adapter?

Right-click on desktop, choose properties, choose screen saver, choose power, look for hibernate, enable, go back to advanced and choose hibernate when you press the power button.

oh i see you have to press shift + standby button in the shutdown menu. thanks, i'll give it a try.

I always use hibernate vice standby. It's basically the same as shutting off your PC, but it gets back to yout desktop, with all utilites already loaded and running, much quicker than a full restart.

well i tried it and it works. but hibernation is not what im looking for. its basically turning it off. i liked standby because it was a quick and easy way to power down your PC (no noise) and wake it up quick. i guess i'll have to look for another solution.

oh and the stock PSU did have the dell proprietary connector, but it was unused. i know because it still has the black plastic cover on it, while ATXV12 connector was used which the antec has. hmm...

Compared to resuming from Stand By, yes. Plus it takes as much HDD space on the OS volume as system RAM is installed.

minmaster, was the video card installed at the same time? If not then I suppose you can be confident the problem is with the PSU in which case you should take it up with the reseller or manufacturer to get a suitable replacement or refund and choose another unit sans such issue. Otherwise, the video driver seems a more likely culprit...

Hmm, 5W @ $0.10 KWh = $0.0005 per hour. That's a whopping 1.2 cents per full day in Stand By. :Q

actually, video card was installed first, and then i realized my stock PSU was too weak for the video card because it kept powering down my PC without warning. the original was like a 250W and the video card recommended a 350W. the 350W was an old PSU i had laying around from an obsolete Athlon PC. my dell is a P4 2.8.

the PSU was installed few days after video card. i used to have a Geforce3Ti and replaced it with X800 GTO. i didnt do any driver cleaning though. could video drivers cause this problem? another problem that arose after these upgrades was my PCI TV-Tuner now gives me blue screen crash with a page fault error. bigtime crash, and i even tried reinstalling the TV tuner drivers but it didnt help. i also did the registry cleaning too. makes me think all these problems are caused by the same thing? maybe i shouldve thoroughly cleaned out the drivers?

Try Catalyst 6.6 or earlier as I know that it worked and was broken with 6.7 and remained so with 6.8 at least (I would not be surprised to learn same with 6.9 and 6.10).

Yeah, maybe try Driver Cleaner to solve the TV-Tuner issue at the same time -particularly by clearing out reference to old Nvidia entries.

what do you mean broken? i dont have any issues with catalyst at the moment. and i think my games require latest graphic drivers so im not sure about downgrading my drivers. as for the cleaning out old drivers, can you recommend the utility program that does this?

Err, I refer specifically to Stand By being broken, defective, non-working, dead, demised, a proverbial ex-parrot (not resting) from 6.7 onwards. That's the issue you have, right? Soo... try 6.6 and if it works then you will know it is the fault of the later ATI driver.

Likewise when I cryptically refer to Driver Cleaner, I mean Driver Cleaner.
