Me and the girl are moving from our 1BR apartment to a 2BR townhouse (woohoo!) on Sept. 8th. Of course, the powers that be have ensured that I'll have lots of important documents/checks ect coming around that time. What's the best way to go about this with the Post Office? What service from them should I use? We already have our new address but we can't have mail coming to it until Sept. 10th. We don't want any mail at our old place by Sept. 6th. I'd prefer something as transparent as possible to the senders. Some people I'm dealing with (like the VA) can take 2 months easily to change an address. I'll go through the official change of address forms for all these things after we move.

What's life experience taught you in regards to this kind of situation ATOT 😀

Have a forward put on the old address to the new one, and then all mail sent to you at the new one held at the post office until you take posession. You'll have some extra trips to the Post Office, but it's worth the hassle of not having to worry about it going to two different places.

I moved from TX to FL and didn't even have my new address yet when I sold the house and hit the road. I just had my mail put on hold at the old address, got to FL, then set up forwarding mail when I found a place to live. It was relatively transparent and take about a week to kick in. Everything was done online and pretty painless (they'll charge your credit card $1 to confirm your identity).

All of the above. I have never had issues with missed mail on moves.

On the other hand, the previous owners of my house took no such care and I still recieve all kinds of mail from them over a year later. For awhile I was even recieving packages from UPS, etc. I eventually spoke to my mail carrier and this traffic has ceased. I am also pretty sure that they broke into my mailbox (it's neighborhood mailbox where we all have little locked cubby holes) around tax time. Must have known that a document was coming.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just took care of the online system on my lunch break, that will work perfectly. I didn't even know about it 🙂.

And calvinbiss, that's exactly what I didn't want to happen definitely. Whoever had our apartment before us didn't do anything, we were getting their mail well into 6 months into the lease.
