What to do on a failed Notebook HDD???

HDD failure... Warranty is expired... Compaq wants $300 for a replacement part, $400 to install...

They've got to be kidding...

Any other ideas when I can get a cheap replacement HDD...?

Laptop hard drives are inexpensive - Newegg sells them in a variety of sizes and speeds. You want a 2.5" hard drive. (Some laptops use the more rare 9.5mm tall drives, but your laptop does not appear to be one of them.)

Yea like cheesehead said. Laptop hds are a common part. Check the usual sources. I got a WD 60gb(I think) for about $70 last summer from Newegg.

Any 2.5" HDD will work - just remove the drive caddy from the Compaq, then remove the HDD from the caddy. Put the new one in the caddy, replace the caddy and reinstall.
