so whatcha gonna do?

I have no freakin idea. Something else that complicates stuff even more is the fact that my boss at my university is posting a new job tomorrow that I plan to apply for. I have a reasonable chance at landing it. It would be much better than the temp agency job.

I just figure I have a 50/50 chance with the govment :) and a 30-40% chance at my old university. Is that enough reason to turn down a job......I just don't know

Sorry to hear that. :( Do you have any idea when they'll know whether or not they will be hiring you (first company that you like)?

Otherwise, I would suck it up for now and take the $25k job. Is it something you could learn to enjoy? You wouldn't be doing it forever, but for now, it's a paycheck and experience on your resume... good luck.

Well it won't really help me in my career goals. I already have 3 years experience doing tech support. I don't think another year will help me. I know from my previous years doing it, I don't like it :)

The ONLY reason I am considering it is because I am unemployeed and I would like to be working....

Take the $25K job now, but DO NOT sign any long term contracts and wait for the possible gov't job. You can always quit the 25k job, but it better to be working as it bulks up your resume and shows that you have been doing something instead of sitting on your ass at home.

What are you going to do when the 34k gov't job falls through and its too late to take teh 25k job because they already filled it.

DO NOT PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET

There is most likely more qualified people competing for jobs than you, a college graduate. I know I graduated in 2001 and still don't have a permanent job. I work for a temp agency and have worked on assignment for the past year, but I make $30k

My question is how do I refuse to sign longterm contracts? They can just say then you don't get the job......

Most temp agencies do not make you sign a contract. Why don't you call them or go in and see them about the job.

If you really don't want the job and its a long term contract all you have to say is:

"Thanks for the offer, but I am not interested. "

I plan to....I am just getting all the information I can before I do in. I don't want to go in without knowing the posibilities.

Good job on calling into HR. Did you ask them if the position was advertised to current gov't employees only? Sometimes positions open up that can only be filled by current gov't employees, In this instance yes it is near impossible for you to get in, unless you are on a waiting list of some type or are a current employee that can lateral over to that position or interview for the promotion.

Most if not all gov't jobs give precedence to vets or state employees. But if the job was advertised and the management went through with thier interview/testing process then they should be free to make thier decision based on the interview testing process.

It isn't like a vet can walk in thier and takea job, he/she needs to go through the process just as well. It's just burocratic (sp)
bullsh!t but thats how it works. At least here in CA.

They have had a generic job opening for over a year. This is the "position" they are hiring me for. Basically they never post new positions for hire. They just have generic openings that close once a year and when they need someone they hire someone.

I am the only person they interviewed. My friend is VERY good friends with a manager and he mentioned he was planning to bring in a new person. My friend told him he knew of the perfect person. They paid for me to make a visit and I interviewed with them.

Basically HR is telling them that if a VET is in line for the type of position I applied for then they get priority over me......
