What to do about my downstairs neighbor(s)

So I live in a upstairs condo and a couple weeks ago my downstairs neighbors went out and got a new TV and home theater system.

Now, they can only watch TV and movies on the loudest possible setting. The pictures on my walls shake and I can't hear my own TV at times.

I have a pretty descent HT setup and got pissed off one night and turned mine all the way up but didn't seem to have any effect on them. My wife and I NEVER listen to our HT loud and the sub is basically shut off.

My wife had some friends over last weekend and we were sitting on the couches talking when they blasted their system. I got kind of embarrased explaining they have to listen to their TV at the loudest setting.

Now, they have been pretty respectable - not playing it loud past say 10pm or early in the morning. Right now, they are watching something and I can hardly hear my TV. Should I go and say something to them or do you think its their right to listen to it however they want as long as its not really late or early?

Also, what was that remote control that those people were using at CES a couple years ago that changed channels or lowered the volumes? I'd like to get one and just shut down their system every time they blast it.

Edit: my wife just called them and asked to lower it. they said sure no problem - however, its still loud. I guess they dont know how to lower the bass

1. Grow a set of testicles
2. Go down and ask them to turn the volume down.
3. ...
4. PROFIT.

hahaha....if I really was evil I know where they keep their spare key. i could wait until they left for the day and cut the wires

No brainer here. Go into their condo when they're not home and sabotage their setup.

wish they had a wii. i would cut the wrist straps ever so slightly so that when they went to use em it would end up like this!!

Tell them again, and if they don't listen, call the police and tell them that they are too loud and "disturbing the peace." They'll get a fine if they don't comply.

Grow some balls, you sissy. My wife and I had this same problem except our neighbors were next to us rather than downstairs. Their loudness violated apartment rules, so I talked to them once, kept having to deal with it, talked to them a second time a week later, and when they still wouldn't stop (heck, they got louder), I contacted the landlord who told me to contact the police (spineless landlords here). I called the cops. They talked to them, got the landlord involved after I showed the cops our lease... next thing you know, the neighbors move out two months later. Problem solved.

EDIT: We had to deal with this as late as 2am in the morning. It was ridiculous. The second time I went over, the guy told me he wasn't going to waste the money he spent on his sweet system. (Logitech 5500s... HAHAHA!) This is the same guy who told us when we moved in that he was a mechanic and two weeks later I ran into him at the Wal-Mart Tire and Lube center selling somebody tires.... HA!

Talk to the super or whoever's in charge on condos. If it's that loud, they'll probably go deaf and just jack it louder.

A creative idea would be to ask them to come up to your place while they're blasting their stereo. If they give a shit, they'll start understanding.

Maybe their bass is producing sound waves that the so far apart they can not tell that it is doing anything but you can feel everything?

I say go down and install something that will let you play porn over their TV whenever you want, see how fast they get rid of it when porn keeps on randomly popping up 🙂

My HOA, condo association is worthless. They wont do anything.

If it got better, but not good enough, ask them to turn on their tv and come upstairs to your place. It's not like they told you to fuck off, it seems like they just don't get how much the sound travels in the building.

I'll give it some time and if this crap keeps up then I'll do that.

Haha... the cops suggested that the guy bugging us come into our apartment to hear the effects, but I wouldn't have it. The guy was sketchy enough as it was, I didn't want him seeing what we owned. Be careful who you let into your home. Seriously.

They have been living in this complex for the past 20 years - theyre a bunch of middle aged harmless folks.

Like I said before I know where they keep their spare key and I could probably F with their wireless network since its not secure. Hmmm let me google a movie the RIAA is tracking on pirate bay and lets see how much trouble I can get them in. ahhh, im not that evil

No wonder it's so loud... they're probably deaf. Karma, man... karma. Just remember, if you wouldn't want it to happen to you, don't dish it yourself. Be respectful about the situation and it will surely save you some serious headaches. From the sounds of it, they seem harmless. Go for the invite to hear the effects. I think it's your best move right now.

I agree, thats why I wont go that route. Funny thing is their only daughter went off to college this past semester and they were upset the day they drove her off to school. They were so upset that they left a set of keys in their door with the door wide open. The door was open for about a day when I realized that nobody was home. I opened the door, yelled inside to see if anyone was home (which they werent), then proceeded to close and lock it. I left a note saying I had the keys and locked the door for them. Next time I should post an ad on craigslist saying FREE STUFF!
