What to do about a skunked dog

I have a Labrador/German Shepard mix, he got skunked when he was out in the yard last night and it's pretty bad. He really reaks! Anyone familiar with this have any home remedies? Does pouring tomato juice all over him really work? I need some ideas bad! This happened once before and we took him to a groomer, but they didn't really do much, he still stunk pretty bad afterwords for a few weeks. Any ideas? Thanks!
 
I had a neighbor who's dog used to get skunked all the time. Sorry I can't remember what he did though other than banish the dog to the garage and the yard.
 
Tomato juice. Enough to fill a small swimming pool 🙂 But seriously I think this is one of those situations where there are no easy remedies.
 
Forget tomato juice. Use distilled vinegar to sponge the area that is sprayed to "neutralize the odor". Then use dawn dish soap to "cut through the oil" (skunk spray is a very oily foam). Follow with regular shampoo and conditioner.

Since a dog is usually sprayed in the face: 1) Rinse the eyes under water; 2) DO use the tomato sauce or juice for the dog to eat or clean their mouth; and 3) Fine mist a 50-50 solution of vinegar-water up the nose (make sure you don't aspirate your dog!!), otherwise you will be able to smell the skunk spray odor for a very long time when near their face (and so will your dog.).
 
I think a company called "Nature's Miracle" makes a Skunk odor remover. search for "Nature's Miracle" at www.petfooddirect.com. You get a quart of the stuff for $7.50. I know it's not a "home remedy" but I would spend crazy money to get my dog from stinking like that.

The product should be available at your local PetCo/PetSmart/vet supply store.

You can also check with your vet, mine carries a product called "Skunk Off". I live out in the sticks and unfortunately have a great deal of experience with skunked dogs (as well as other nasty smelling stuff). It works just as well as vinegar and shampoos etc. but with out the hasself of mixing this and that and what not. It comes in a little bucket and I always have at least 2 or 3 in the garage 🙂
