The Sl is not what you want. WAY to heavy, as stated above. The VR4's are amazing cars as far as performance, especially when you start to consider their weight. We're talkin stock is around 6 sec on 0-60 and quarters time around 13 or 14 I THINK. But, with that many miles on a VR4 your nearly assured of having to replace turbos, and the VR4 has two of'm. Also check insurance. i looked at a VR4, the payments for the car werew 500 a month, the full coverage with 2000 deductable was 550 a month. Nope. Thats WAY to much, more then the car payment! Anyways, all 3000GT's have 6 cylinder engines, the VR4 just has twin turbo.

Man, a 3000GT was my dream car in high school. I still smile when I see one on the street.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!!!!!! I have a 93 3000GT and it is crap! First of all, parts for these cars are VERY expencive. Most all parts for these cars are dealer item only.....that means no going to the local parts stores, you pay top dollar at the dealership. I cannot beleive all the problems Ive had with this car. It leaks water into the car like a b!tch, drivers side power window quit. A part called the idle speed control motor went out, 300 dollars for that. The hydrolic lifters tick in the motor.....enough to drive a man nuts. The lifter tick is a common problem with the 3000gt's. Ive replaced the power antenna motor twice:|. They are not that fast at 220hp.....probably cause they weigh as much as a small truck!!! I bought this car mainly on its looks, stupid me. If you want a nice sporty car around that year get a Nissan 300Z....they are a lot beter.

Forgot to mention...A 3000GT is IDENTICAL to a Dodge Stealth. And the Stealth weighs ALOT less, but also doesnt have all the creature comforts of the GT. So, parts on those two are interchangable. Hell, the powertrain is the same...So, go to junkyards or an auto parts store and check on Dodge parts.

Depends on the year Shockwave. The early models had differant motors. The mitsubishi had (and always did) the DOHC V6, the Stealth started out with SOHC V6. The bodies are differant too. Dodge designed the Stealth body but used the 3000gt interior.

Thank you Capt'n Obvious! *L* I KNOW the bodies are different!! As for engines, ya, I do remember something like that. Its beena while since i was shopin for these, about a year ago., Completey quit when I found what insurance was gonna be. But ya, ok, some years are the same, some different. i THINK the newer ones are pretty much the same.
Course, like I said its been a while, more the point is look into it I guess...*L* or maybe I should! ;)

lol being a 3000GT owner myself some of the comments in this thread made me laugh. :)
Stealth = 3000GT... neither weighs a lot less than the other they're the exact same thing except the bodies are slightly different... most noticable is the spoiler.

If you want to get good answers then please go to the 3000GT/Stealth internation forums.
Do a search or register and post away.
BTW I own a 95 3000GT Auto

with 74K miles. Sure the VR4 is faster but this is plenty fast for a daily driver. If that car has a manual transmission I'd say go for it.

If the transmission rebuild is concerning you, I wouldnt worry too much. Mitsubishi's have a habit of eating transmissions. I had an 1986 Mitsubishi Galant that needed a transmission rebuil after around 8 years (and it was not driven hard, it was driven by my mom who rarely pushes the car). I currently have a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse that had its transmission rebuilt in 2000, after 8 years. I have no clue about the 3000GT but I would imagine the same might be true. I dont know if this is a problem with Mitsubishi's but I am not the only one who has experienced transmission difficulties with their Mitsubishi's (some MUCH earlier than 8 years too).

BTW you said it has 120K miles... check and see if the 120K maintenance has been done... if not have it done. It'll cost you approx $700 for the parts (including oil pump) + another $700 for labor if you don't do it yourself.

"...all while dealing with my bitch of a mom complaining about cost"

You rear ended 2000 Grand Am in what, your parent's 94 Crown Victoria? Who pays for the insurance on these things? I can't even imagine what it would cost to insure a sports car like that after that accident! Who is paying for that? And you have the nerve to call your mom a bitch because she's complaining about cost? Who is paying for all this crap anyway?

Edit: BTW, what did you do for her for mother's day?

I used to be a Car dealer and every 3000GT we traded for were "ragged out" and needed many thousands to repair. the engine is not that common and Mitsu isn't a Honda or Toyota so a Overhaul or rebuild will be in the near future. Also keep it away from your local dealer they charge way to much! another thing that car has power everything and at that milage stuff stops working all the time.

be a nice car if it had less than 50K on it

I'd keep looking

And $7500 with that milage is not the best deal anyhow. the seller will want to get rid of it so they do not have to pay for all the upkeep.

One car that we got that wasn't too bad was the Nissan 300ZX alot were very well taken care of and the initial quality on a Nissan is better as well IMHO. I am Biased cause I ended up Buying one that was a one owner.

sorry to burst your bubble.

Do you like Preludes? those enigines last 4ever and are pretty cool to boot much better and more fun to drive than the Heavy 3000GT and a Vtech has 190HP so it will haul balls.

i'd have to take a big "NOS" sticker off the front windshield
just read this. Anytime you see that crap you know it has been "Ragged out" it means some Kiddo Ricer thought he was the shiznit and probably drove it into the ground. Soon as I saw that quote Alarms went off Don't buy it Don't Buy It!!! you been warned

dude - edmunds.com lists the value of that car at $3500-$4000, according to the info you provided.

a girl driver... so thats probably good
just had its transmission rebuilt...
he actually paid more to have a better job done
i'd have to take a big "NOS" sticker off the front windshield
gotta figure out if i can buy it first

all of these statements make me very nervous.
take the car to a Mitsubishi Dealer, ask the service department to look it over and tell you what needs to be fixed and how much it will cost.
$7000 seems way to much - use edmunds.com and kelleybluebook.com to get some idea about "market value"
make the deal only if the cost is reasonable for the condition of the car - otherwise walk away..

Dude,
luckily i have state farm insurance
I would see what the Insurance would be first before buying anything that says GT on it If you made a claimed anything in that wreck you had SF might make you pay through the nose for a car like that alsoyou might be paying a Surcharge for a year or two on just the wreck. they used to do that it stinks but it also makes sense. Remember now SF considers you a bad driver. It only takes one Claim to get that way. I been there done that.
