Well guys. I need a gaming computer. This HP from wal-mart just isn't cutting it anymore. I was done with gaming for the longest time....but with Quake 4, FEAR, and all the other great games coming out I have to get back in it.

I want to build a cheap but good computer.

I was thinking about AMD 64 X2s. I see the 3800+ is around $330 on newegg.com

And for the video card I thought I might go all out and get a 7800 GTX.

The video card and CPU will eat a lot of my budget tho. I'll try to go somewhat generic on the rest.

I'm not sure about the...

Motherboard
Ram
HD
PSU

I already have a case. So I don't need another.

Any suggestions?

*update*

Alright. So I ordered a few parts today...

AMD 64 3800+ X2
160 Western Digital HD
2x512mb Corsair Memory
DFI Lan Party Ultra D Motherboard

Now I need help with the PSU. Any suggestions on a PSU? I want to order the 7800 GT....but the 7800 GTX KO has caught my eye. Do you think its worth the extra cash?

$1200 build

MOBO=DFI Ultra D or Epox 9npa+ Ultra ($130 DFI $105 Epox)
CPU=Venice 3200+ ($170)
Video=x800GTO2 ($235) or (7800GT ($345)
RAM=2x512 of OCZ Value ($100)
MONITOR=Hyundai 19" image quest (price depends on specials) (usually $300)
Sound Card=Soundblaster Audigy 2 Value ($40)
Speakers=Logitech Z-2300 ($100)
Mouse and Keyboard=Logitech LX700 wireless combo ($65)
DVD Burner=NEC 16x ($45)

You can change some of this around like step up to a X2 3800+ and 2GB of memory.

Overclocking: Get the DFI motherboard and an OCZ PowerStream PSU. Grab some DDR500 (NON-VALUE) ram, but don't spend the big bucks for Crucial's Ballistix, you'd be better off with tighter timings.

Stock: Grab an Epox 9npa+ Ultra and a seasonic PSU, Kingston HyperX ram.

IMO, the 7800GT is the sweet spot for a performance graphics card, unless you'll be running at some ridiculous wide screen resolution with everything turned up to full.

Thanks. I'll look into the 7800GT. I'll be ordering the CPU, MOBO, and maybe the HD tonight.

How about this mobo? DFI Lan Party Nforce4 Ultra-D. I can get it for 129.00 combo with a AMD 64 3800+ X2.

Good Choice?

tighter timings on an a64 platform isnt going to give you a big of no performance increase the only place that i have seen it preform better is extracting other than that its a waste curcial ballistix is good ram better than kingston hyperX.
