What to buy to keep my P4 2.4 cool?

So this is my PC right now: P4 2.4c GHZ, ABIT IS7-E, 1GB PC 3200, ATI 9800

So anyway I have upgraded my video card to a 6800gt. However I'm worried that my cpu (P4 2.4) will bottleneck this new card. So I'm thinking I might try and overclock my cpu.

So what could I add to keep my cpu cool when I overclock?

Thanks guys.

What are your temps now?
What core P4 are you running?

Take a look at ThermalRight xp-90 or some of the Zalman Coolers.

I would recomend using a xp-90 and a Vantec Tornado for a fan, if noise is an issue, go with a Panaflo fan.

Go for the Zalman 7000.

I have one of these on my 2.4 ghz.

Cools great & quiet to boot.

No, if you want the best for cooling, go with the ThermalRight XP-90, look it up vs. the Zalman 7000, it's the better choice.

This here says "Thermalright Fan (INCLUDED)"

So will this be all I need? Do I have to buy another fan for it or what? I just dropped $ on a new card so I'm trying to keep it low.

Yes it will be all you need, if you can afford another $10 go for a nice 92mm Panaflo fan instead of the one that's included it will make a diference in noise especially.

Also if you want to save yourself like another 4 degrees C, go with some arctic silver 5 thermal paste.

it says 44.79 cfm @ 35 db but it seems quieter than that even

Oh, I never did see the specs on it, that doesn't look too bad at all. Looks like it has some nice air movement too at 45 cfm.

I would just stay with the fan that comes with it then if you are trying to stay as cheap as possible.

core is obviously northwood. They didn't make 2.4c prescotts 🙂.

it's not obvious, it could also be a Willamette.

the 'c' was a 800mhz fsb northwood!

Oops I didn't see the little c in the OP's typing.

May I ask why it was necesary to post the same thing twice......yaaanef

imo it wasnt a good idea to upgrade with the 6800gt. The Cpu&Chipset is simply too old. The cheapest way at the moment would be a A64 3000+ occed to..2,5 if ur lucky. And yes i know that means spending money but i dont see any chance that the CPU will perform much better even when u overclock it. It seems P4 northwoods do not scale good when u overclock them, so no big perfomance gain :/.
Still u can give it a try, but dont use the Pentium Stock Cooler, cuz i think they are not made for overclocking, though P4 northwood do not get very hot, i had mine occed to 2,9Ghz at 45° while gaming (i just set the fsb to about 165 and there was still room for higher fsb...still performance increase wasnt even noticable *sigh*) If u wanna do it anyways and with ur stock cooler u can monitor ur temperatures with appz like http://www.dvhardware.net/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=3

The new Uli chipset seems to be a good alternative to keep a current AGP card. It has a seperate pci-e system too so one can upgrade to an pcie card later. Asrock is the only manufacturer that comes to my mind offering a board with that chipset...ASRock 939Dual-SATA2, ULi M1695/M1567...for a measely 60$ worth a try. Anandtech and THG have both reviewed a board and seem to like it. So, id suggest a board with that Uli Chipset plus a A64 3000+ and a good hsf. Zalman, Thermalright, Arctic is cheap but can do the job too.

I have a baby on the way so I can't spend anymore $.

theres no way to stop a p4 from bottlenecking a 6800gt or higher. occing doesnt help much aswell.

Bah, I feel like I wasted my $ now. 🙁

ye, maybe. but try it with oc´ing. Maybe my own experience do not apply for u 😉. increasing the fsb step to step will show. a clean system and defragmentation sometimes help too.
if thats not enough performance, A64 seems to be the best way for more performance.

e:/ congratz 🙂

I see.

Well these guys are saying it's a good cpu to oc.

HERE

I wouldn't know but I was hoping for similar results. They got it up to 3.3ghz.
